Wedding dresses in the USSR: what dresses did Soviet girls wear when they got married?

What is a wedding without fun, competitions, entertainment, and fiery dancing until you drop? The era of the 80s is simply ideal for organizing a “wedding in the style...” Disco time is youth, dynamic music, rhythm, chic, sparkles, reckless non-stop fun.

Such a wedding would please both the guests, the newlyweds, and their parents, who in those years were young, in love and could have fun and dance the night away. Like any wedding, an 80s style wedding requires careful preparation.

80's style wedding: bride's dress and groom's suit

Wedding fashion of the 80s was quite diverse. The bride's dress does not have to be white. You can choose cream, ivory or soft pink. The style of the dress can be classic, elegant or extravagant with bright and unusual trim.

It is not necessary to completely copy the style of an 80s wedding dress; you can use elements of the style, for example, a veil or guipure gloves.

The bride and groom can complement each other's image.

Most often in those years, the bride's dress was long with a full skirt with satin, lace or tulle inserts.

The head was decorated with a wreath and veil. Wide-brimmed hats were also in fashion.

The groom can wear a black, brown or dark blue pair, tie or bow tie. You can choose a white or cream suit with a black or dark brown shirt. The look will be more fun and brighter with multi-colored socks under the trousers.

However, at a disco-style wedding, the newlyweds can be dressed less formally. The bride can wear a trouser suit or a bright dress made of light, airy fabrics. High-heeled shoes, bright makeup and a lot of large, bright jewelry. An informal groom is allowed to wear jeans, a T-shirt or a bright shirt.

50s style wedding dresses: new standards

In the middle of the century, new standards firmly established themselves in fashion, primarily thanks to Christian Dior, the creator of the new look style. He successfully transferred the image of a gentle, beautiful, almost fairy-tale princess into modern times. Wedding dresses in the style of the 50s are that rare case when the sex appeal of an outfit is emphasized by its simplicity and even naivety.

The style of this dress exactly recreates the hourglass silhouette. Delicately and clearly emphasized bust line, thin waist and freely defined hip line. The classic style of this outfit involves a closed neckline with a round or oblong - “boat” - neckline and at the same time completely open arms. As a slight provocation, designers often use a deep cutout at the back.

The elegance of the waist is emphasized by a bell skirt, the pomp of which resembles a ballroom crinoline. But even in the 60s, modern and lightweight materials such as tulle were used to create a silhouette. It allows you to create a clear and at the same time flying silhouette. The length is arbitrary, but it must emphasize the slimness and beauty of the legs.

Such styles look great not only in classic white. Such dresses made of chiffon of any pastel shades look magnificent and inimitable - from mint to pink, and all tones of red are intended for the most extravagant brides.

The style of such outfits involves a minimum of jewelry and decor. All attention should be focused on the face and magnificent figure of the newlywed. Miniature wrist-length gloves, pumps and a clutch will perfectly complement the look.

Bridal bouquet in 80s style

An 80s style bridal bouquet can be:

Traditional - a bouquet is collected from flowers with long stems and tied with a wide ribbon or bow. Such a bouquet may seem bland and ordinary to modern brides, but in an era of total shortages, this type of bouquet was considered very fashionable and stylish. A wedding bouquet of calla lilies was quite expensive at that time. Bouquets were often made from roses, gladioli and carnations.

A wedding cascade of flowers - this type of wedding bouquet is coming back into fashion from the distant 80s. Flowers are selected with long stems and arranged in a cascading bouquet. The length of such a cascading bouquet can be up to a meter. This floral waterfall will suit tall, slender brides.

For a cascading wedding bouquet in the Soviet style, roses and lilies decorated with greenery are suitable.

50-60s

The mid-twentieth century in the USSR was a time of change. The country of the most reading people, the country that launched the first cosmonaut into the sky, the country that could “catch up and overtake” anyone! Every year, Soviet universities admitted and graduated millions of “physicists and lyricists,” and the girls of the USSR no longer wanted to get married in a dress sewn by their mother. Newlyweds who received a coupon to visit the “Honeymoon Salon” could count on factory-made outfits that corresponded to the fashion of the time. And the bravest brides, who were not afraid to flash their legs in public, acquired mini dresses.

Dress code for guests in the style of the 80s

Men can wear jeans, banana pants, leather jackets, colorful shirts, Cossack boots, boots with multi-colored luminescent laces. Glasses - fox-shaped, mirrored, large, bright colors and fancy shapes in a plastic frame.

Ladies can choose bright wide blouses, short tops, short tight skirts, bright evening dresses, leggings, sandals or stilettos. Bright makeup, lots of sparkles and rhinestones. High hairstyles with a backcomb and bright large jewelry.

Wedding hall decor in the spirit of the 80s

A wedding celebration in the style of the 80s must certainly take place in a spacious banquet hall with a bar counter and a large dance floor. A huge rotating mirror ball under the ceiling, color music, smoke, special effects - in short, everything that will allow young people and guests to plunge into the disco era.

How to use music records in the decor of a Soviet wedding

The hall should be decorated with garlands and posters depicting disco stars of the 80s, record sleeves and the records themselves with the music of those years, a soda fountain should be installed, and large soft sofas should be placed. Guests will be able to feel the atmosphere of those years, both at the traditional wedding table and at small round tables. The table of the bride and groom must be decorated with arrangements of fresh flowers.

What to combine with

It is impossible to imagine a complete bridal look without accessories. Some of them are mandatory, while others serve only to put the image together.

Hats

This accessory is not always present in wedding looks. In fact, it is the most festive and solemn. To embody the fashion of those years at your wedding, you should decide which headdress will most closely suit the whole image.

70s

This is a time of rebellion and self-discovery. Hats should be extravagant and unusual. A chiffon scarf and a wreath of fresh flowers will go well with a dress in a rustic style.

The decoration on the head should be natural, as if accidentally tied in a hurry. Therefore, complex hats and veils are completely unsuitable.

If desired, the hairstyle can be decorated with a veil that will completely cover the face, falling beautifully from the head.

80s

The bride will look stylish and complete with a veil. Particular attention should be paid to its size. A short version will help add playfulness and flirtatiousness to the image, but long forms are romantic and tender.

On top of the veil you can wear a beautiful wreath of artificial flowers. It will look neat on your head.

If desired, you can use a headband of artificial flowers as the main accessory. It is this that is made the main detail of the hairstyle.

90s

Hats - this is the word so loved by brides who want to embody the retro style of the 90s. All sorts of options, from small tablets to wide ones.

A solemn look will be with a flirty wide-brimmed hat on top of the head. This model can be diluted with a veil or tulle flounces.

Shoes

It is impossible to imagine any bride without shoes. To make it harmonize with the dress, check out the interesting style solutions.

70s

An excellent option is sandals, open sandals. If the wedding takes place in the cold season, then pay attention to the original, so-called cowboy boots. The modern hippie style involves a combination of a soft top and a rough bottom. Therefore, feel free to choose heavy and massive boots.

In summer, you can also pay attention to ankle boots with small curly cutouts.

80s

Shoes are what a retro style bride should have. The square heel and strappy base are key details that define the 80s style.

Heel size is medium or high. Ballet flats or versions with pointed toes are not acceptable.

Elegant plain shoes are something that can currently be found in a wide range of stores.

90s

Pointed pumps, high-heeled options, bright models - this is an incomplete list that crazy years provide brides with.

Since at that time the emphasis was on luxury, the shoes were decorated as brightly and lavishly as the outfit itself . Rhinestones or stones could be used as decorations.

Decorations

80s style wedding invitations

80s style wedding invitations should be bright, shiny, maybe with gold embossing. You can make the invitations yourself, decorating them with sparkles, or you can make them in the form of disco tickets. For a sample, you can ask your parents to look among old cards for invitations to friends’ weddings, and they probably left a couple from their own wedding as souvenirs. Instead of traditional cards, you can place small fake record envelopes on the tables.

Wedding dress of the 70s, 80s, 90s: dresses from the USSR and the turn of those times

Vintage style has always been considered one of the most advantageous.
Fashion is constantly changing, but nevertheless it often returns to those old, but still relevant trends. If you wear your grandma's wedding dress and add modern details, the bride won't look ridiculous. This is a retro look that is so popular and common today.

Every girl, at least for a moment, wants to feel like a film star of the 70s, a star of the 80s and a heroine of the 90s. All this can be done at a wedding by choosing the right dress and appropriate accessories.

Music and wedding competitions in the style of the 80s

At a disco-style wedding there should be a lot of energetic, fiery music. Thanks to “Disco of the 80s” being so popular today, the most popular hits of this period are well known to both the older and younger generations.

A dance program in the style of that era can be provided by a disc jockey dressed in the fashion of those years - large glasses, jeans, a bright jacket or a wide shirt with a narrow tie. You can invite musicians who will be dressed in the style of VIA of those years and will perform hits of that time.

Compositions by ABBA, Modern Talking, CC Catch, BONEY M, Mikel Jackson, Zodiac, Diana Ross, Madonna will appeal to both modern youth and those who were young in the magnificent 80s. Among the domestic musicians and groups, the guests will probably be “Mirage”, “Firebird”, “Earthlings”, Sergei Minaev, Zhenya Belousov, “Kar-Man”, Vladimir Markin, Igor Kornelyuk and many, many others.

Of course, there should be a lot of fun and exciting wedding competitions at the wedding. They may be knowledgeable about tunes and artists from the 80s era. You can hold a karaoke marathon for the best performance of hits. It’s not difficult to come up with a lot of dance competitions that will allow young people to show their skills, and for dads and moms to shake off the old days.

For the older generation, it is worth organizing a competition to see who can solve the Rubik’s Cube the fastest, or a quiz on knowledge of the series “Slave Isaura” with a disc with this TV hit being awarded to the winner.

White color, train, corset bodice, lots of bows and veil

Those who are under 40 years old today find it hard to believe that wedding dress stores simply didn’t have any color other than white. Theoretically, it was possible to register a marriage in the registry office without the fuss and the solemn part, but for this it was still necessary:

  • Stand in line for marriage registration (from the date of birth to 45 days);
  • Justify the fact that the marriage was not “fictitiously” registered;
  • In an emergency, I had to refuse coupons for champagne, alcohol, red caviar, etc.;
  • Present an invoice or an order for custom tailoring of the bride's dress.

And without the last document, the chances of registering a marriage were rapidly approaching zero. Considering the special attitude towards marriage in the USSR, which only in the mid-90s somehow came into line with the wishes of the “weds,” wedding fashion in the 90s was regulated by several regulations:

  • The newlyweds must be formally dressed (the man in a black suit, the bride in a white dress);
  • Witnesses must be dressed appropriately: white top, black bottom. The use of colorful ribbons with inscriptions was allowed;
  • A young woman's dress should hide her shoes. Frills should not interfere with the registrar; the veil cannot fall to the level of the hem;
  • The hands of the bride and groom must be without gloves. Sleeves should not go below the wrist.

And so on. In total, there were about 70 points in the code, according to which the bride and groom were asked to choose a fashionable wedding dress in the 90s.

Ateliers and “salons” that offered wedding dresses at that time were in a very difficult situation. At any moment they could be removed from the program, which means they were guaranteed to lose clients. That’s why they stamped identical wedding dresses for brides and suits for grooms and gradually added details.

Until, in 1993, the system of compulsory registration according to the rules of the USSR finally fell into oblivion.
