Men's vest. Is it needed in a men's wardrobe?

If you have at least one three-piece suit in your wardrobe, then you know that in addition to the jacket, it also has a vest. The advantages of such a suit in comparison with the “two-piece” are obvious:

  • A special feeling. Once you try on a three-piece suit, you will no longer want to wear other options. Three is a special style and status. Such a suit, if chosen correctly, reveals the impeccable taste of its owner.
  • Perfect fit. High-quality suits made from natural fabrics and excellent patterns fit your body with minimal adjustment. Nothing hangs down on the sides or protrudes, all the disadvantages of the figure are hidden, all the advantages are emphasized.
  • Impeccable view. Three-piece suits are classics that are always in trend. And if someone tells you that this is not so, then they simply do not know how to wear such suits. And you can wear it anywhere - from the office to a wedding or corporate event.

You may think you know everything about the three-piece suit. Can you wear it without a jacket?

How and why do they wear a three-piece shirt without a jacket?

Previously, the three-piece suit was worn in full, since the back of the vest was sewn from satin, silk, viscose and other similar fabrics. The choice in favor of such fabrics was explained simply: they allowed the jacket to “slide” along the back, not restrict movement and visually make the massive suit a little more elegant.

Of course, in those days, a vest simply wouldn’t look good without a jacket. But now everything has changed. Now the “backs” of jackets are sewn from the same material as the front part; vests can be worn with a shirt and trousers without a jacket. And that's great because you can:

  • Take off your jacket at any time. For example, if you are hot or uncomfortable, or if the official part of the event has passed and you can relax a little.
  • Wear a vest, shirt and trousers set to the office or to a meeting, event or even on a date. In any setting, such a bow will be appropriate and attractive.
  • Take off your jacket indoors when the weather is still too warm for coats and other outerwear, but it is already cool without a jacket in the early morning and late evening.

Perfect shirts for summer

You can choose a white T-shirt, polo or henley as a basic item for your summer wardrobe. But the best option would be a long-sleeve shirt made of woven materials. You can look chic in a shirt in summer.

Textile

Pay attention to the fabric of the shirt.
The best material for a shirt is Egyptian cotton or luxury long-weave cotton. This shirt is pleasant to the body. Linen is also suitable, it is strong, durable, inexpensive, and breathes well. But linen wrinkles a lot. Modern synthetic fabrics are also good if they are of high quality. Synthetics have proven negative because they make cheap shirts. But today synthetic materials are of high quality, especially with the addition of natural fibers. Types of weaving fabrics for shirts:

The strength of the material and the ability of air to pass through the fabric depend on the weaving.

  • Linen.
  • Twill (with a diagonal pattern), wrinkles less.
  • Poplin is stronger than plain weave.
  • Seersucker. Allows air to circulate well. The skin in such a shirt breathes.

Here are a few rules for wearing a three-piece without a jacket

Remember them if you want to look stylish in any setting:

  • the vest should fit tightly to the body, but be adjusted exactly to size - otherwise it will look ridiculous;
  • a correctly selected vest covers the waistband of the trousers in front and back, the lower part of the shirt should not be visible;
  • the last button of the vest is not buttoned, and if you need to reduce the formal tone, you can roll up the shirt sleeves;
  • A narrow tie or a neat bow tie goes well with a vest, but it is better not to use a tie clip;
  • a vest without a jacket is for an informal setting; it is complemented by dark trousers and a light shirt.

We've figured out the rules for wearing a three-piece suit without a jacket. Now you need to understand how the shirt and vest should fit.

Shirt styling

Denim shirt

A denim shirt can be tucked in, worn untucked, buttoned up, or layered over a turtleneck or T-shirt.

Shirt with turtleneck

Shirts look chic and stylish in combination with turtlenecks. A turtleneck can be combined in color with one of the colors on the shirt or in the look as a whole.

Military

For every day, even instead of a denim jacket, you can wear a khaki military-style shirt. Comfortable, stylish, practical thing.

In a cage

A checkered shirt is a stylish classic. You can repeat the experiments of famous designers and bleach part of the shirt with bleach, cut it off at the edges, or sew it to another shirt.

Unusual design

A shirt with an original cut can become a style-defining item.

With a bomber jacket

The bomber jacket is considered a sporty wardrobe item, but it looks great with a dress shirt tucked into trousers.

With an image

Bright shirts with prints are coming into fashion; summer itself tells you to buy such a shirt and wear it.

Like a stylish feature

A shirt can be tied on top of another shirt, worn over or under another shirt. If one shirt is not enough for your look, you can always experiment with two. This will create additional volume for those men who want to look more impressive.

Top vests and T-shirts

Of course, shirts work great in layered looks. Vests are coming back into fashion, try experimenting with them.

With coat and trench coat

With a raincoat the shirt will look stylish and casual, with a coat it will look expensive and formal.

With vest

Knitted, puffed, suit vests are on trend. Vests of all types with shirts look stylish.

With shorts

Most men wear T-shirts with shorts in the summer, but try pairing shorts with shirts.

A shirt is not a boring official item of men's wardrobe, but a storehouse of ideas for stylish, business, fashionable everyday and holiday looks.

Look what rule works in this case:

The vest should not hang over the shoulders or go over the collar of the shirt, and the shirt should not stick out from under the vest. Everything seems clear, but there is a question: is it necessary to tuck a shirt into trousers? And how to make sure that it doesn’t come out from under the vest? Here are the answers to these questions:

  • If you wear a vest and shirt to an informal event, then a departure from formality is allowed. You can either not tuck your shirt in at all, or tuck it only in the back, front, or one side. But even in this case, the shirt should be chosen perfectly, in size, and not resemble a poorly packed parachute.
  • If you plan to wear a three-piece shirt and then take off your jacket at an official event or business meeting, then the bottom of the shirt should be tucked into the trousers - you cannot allow the edges to stick out from under the vest. In this case, all components of the suit - vest, shirt and trousers - should fit perfectly to the figure.
  • The ideal shirt for a three-piece suit is tailored to size, has no folds or overhangs on the stomach, and does not stretch to fit your figure. And, of course, it does not crawl out from under the vest with every movement of the hands. To do this, you need to try on the shirt together with the jacket, and then always carefully tuck it in.

Vest with mismatched trousers

The good thing about a tweed vest is that it can be worn not only with suits - it also looks great with mismatched trousers and jackets, often forming a very impressive ensemble (especially if you haven’t forgotten about the tie). Tim Gunn, for example, wrote: “I prefer to wear a vest as a separate item of clothing - I like it to stand out from the rest of my clothes due to the material used.” Of course, you can do without a jacket - in this case, as we said above, vests with collars and lapels look especially good. We recommend complementing such ensembles with ties, although you can do without these accessories if you wish.

When selecting mismatched trousers for a tweed vest, two points should be kept in mind. First: choose models from textured or fairly thick fabrics. So, models made of tweed, wool flannel, twill (cotton or wool), and moleskine are well suited. Trousers made of thin, smooth wool and linen do not harmonize well with tweed: the first - due to the lack of texture and small thickness, and second - because of their seasonality (tweed is associated with winter, and linen with summer). Cotton linen blend pants can sometimes work, but rarely.

Second nuance: do not try to match the trousers to the vest. Of course, the colors of the trousers and vest (and in some cases, the jacket) should be in harmony with each other, but if they are too close, then the effect of mixed up suits arises - and there is nothing stylish about it. That’s why, for example, you should pair gray or brown trousers with a blue vest. Yes, blue can also work, but not always - you need the shades of the trousers and vest to be noticeably different from each other. For example, a light blue vest with dark blue trousers may look good, but a dark blue vest may not (unless, of course, it is made of exactly the same fabric as the trousers).

Let us add that trousers with arrows will be the best choice, but models without arrows are also appropriate in some cases. There may be no folds at the waistband, but they will not be superfluous (although there are also different opinions on this matter - for example, Tim Gunn categorically does not like folds, while Michael Anton has a positive attitude towards them).

What should you do if your shirt still comes out from under your vest?

The following lifehacks will help solve this problem:

  1. Put on your shirt and fasten all the buttons, press it to your underwear. Then put on your pants and carefully smooth out the folds on your stomach. Now you can fasten your trousers. This life hack works if the shirt is chosen perfectly and fits snugly around the waist.
  2. If you have a T-shirt under your shirt, tuck it into your boxers, and only then button up your shirt and pants. But this method is not suitable for everyone. If you prefer swimming trunks rather than boxers, then try the previous or next methods - they will work 100%.
  3. If you have already noticed that the shirt under the vest has begun to puff up, then you can move the excess fabric to the sides - this will make the folds less noticeable. To do this, tuck the buttoned shirt into the trousers, and then make folds on the sides and button the trousers.

As you can see, it’s not difficult to look presentable in a three-piece without a jacket. The main thing is that the suit fits perfectly. It’s good if the suit matches harmoniously with shoes and accessories. By the way, in Keyman salons it is easy to choose a ready-made set - a suit with a vest, trousers and a set of accessories.
