Style Features
Rustic style is a type of country interior design. This mixed style combines eco-friendliness and old-time rustic aesthetics. Rustic is a very popular style solution for country houses.
- The main distinguishing feature is eclecticism. The interior harmoniously combines modern technology, comfortable furnishings, original accessories and simple decoration.
- The main elements of the style are natural materials such as stone and wood.
- The pieces of furniture have a solid, massive and slightly rough appearance.
- The interior contains homespun fabrics and natural fabrics in natural colors or with ethnic patterns.

Finishes and materials
The cladding is carried out mainly in natural and high-quality materials.
- Floor. To finish the floor in a rustic style, different wood species are used in the form of bleached, stained oak, wenge, birch, pine, alder or linden. The materials undergo minimal processing, so they have natural defects, knots and cracks. Linoleum or laminate with an imitation of wood that has darkened over time would also be appropriate on the floor.
- Walls. Rough stone or red brickwork look quite voluminous and give the interior an antique look. In a small room in a rustic style, the walls can be decorated with decorative plaster, liquid or paper wallpaper with a rough texture. Casually applied paint will also work.
- Ceiling. The surface is painted, whitewashed or wallpaper with a wood texture is used. Massive beams with bark remnants accentuate the rustic style especially well.
- Doors. Wood is used in the manufacture of structures. Rustic doors should have a fairly solid and reliable appearance.
- Window. When finishing a house, it is preferable to choose frames made of natural wood. Laminated PVC windows, stylized to match the surrounding design, would be appropriate for apartments.

For rooms with high levels of humidity, cladding in the form of tiles imitating iron or wood is generally chosen.

Rustic style in the interior of a house or apartment
What should you consider when choosing rustic? The interior of the house will be replete with volumetric details, so it is advisable to use it in spacious rooms.
If space is limited, but you really want to decorate your home in a rustic style, then you can use modern materials. For walls - decorative plaster, liquid or paper wallpaper with a rough texture. For the floor - linoleum or laminate, imitating the texture of wood. The main thing in this case is the quality of finishing.
The rustic interior is calm and discreet. Everything is solid, “to last forever,” especially the furniture. Shall we come in?
Hallway
The front door is massive, with a forged handle and black metal overlays, like in a fairy tale. The door material is wood, less often metal. Let's discover... Light wood floors, walls and ceiling. You can also decorate the floor with stone tiles. It should be uniform, the same tone. A chest of drawers, a built-in wardrobe - antique, darkened with time, or antique, can be deliberately rough. No grace. Lamps and lampshades in warm colors.
Living room
Ceiling beams or their imitation. The walls can be made of thick round timber. They take logs with bark, gnarled and smelling delicious. A fireplace is not uncommon in such an interior. And a real one, stone or brick, with live fire. In front of which it is so pleasant to sit in a massive rustic chair with thick legs. The wall behind the fireplace is usually made of stone from floor to ceiling. Yes, of course there will be a TV or home theater, a stereo system. But everything is hidden behind wooden panels. Wide floorboards are covered with carpet runners. A wooden grandfather clock ticks steadily.
Bedroom
Wood flooring, usually a darker tone than the ceiling. In the center there is a large, comfortable bed and bedside tables. The storage area is hidden behind a wooden or wicker partition. The usual chest of drawers is replaced by a chest with forged corners, hinges and eyes for a lock. Curtains, bedspreads, and carpets must match in color. The rustic interior of the bedroom is complemented by a wicker lampshade on the ceiling and lamps for each zone.
Kitchen
The rustic kitchen is functional and modern. But all the necessary household appliances are hidden behind the wooden facades of the kitchen furniture. It is possible to use an adhesive film that imitates a wooden texture. Stone finishing in all its glory: apron, work surface, floor. This is appropriate and very practical. The dining area has a massive wooden table and chairs, possibly furniture with carved elements. Ceramic and wooden kitchen utensils and dishes. Tall glass bottles and clay jugs.
Bathroom
Wood finishing and high humidity are incompatible without special treatment. Impregnation saves against rotting and fungus. A light stone floor and walls are appropriate here. Wood is suitable for a ceiling, a door, perhaps a dressing table, seats or a chair.
The sink can be placed on a thick pictorial board.
The picture will be complemented by a mirror framed with fragments of bark or twigs - a real design masterpiece.
Bathroom art object - a massive wooden barrel or tub for washing.
We described the option for an apartment. If we are talking about a house, then a free-standing bathhouse is more suitable for a rustic style, rather than a washing place in the house. Especially, harmoniously integrated into the garden ensemble. A rustic-style project also places special demands on bathroom fittings.
Children's
A fabulous wooden house-bed, ladders for a little fidget, a chest for mysterious children's treasures, hemp stools. All furniture has “round corners”. Here, contrary to style, careful surface finishing is required for safety. Toys can be placed in wicker baskets.
Furniture and decor
Furniture in a rustic style is predominantly handmade. Always natural wood.
Distinctive features: good quality, massiveness, reliability, solidity, roughness of execution and finishing.
All furniture should be in antique style. Emphatically simple lines, without subtlety and grace. Carved, wicker furniture, round stools made from a sawn trunk, tabletops made of solid wood, simple wooden benches, bed headboards made of logs, antique chests and chests of drawers with forged parts are perfect. Upholstery is only natural, mostly plain fabrics. Modular and folding furniture and transformers will look strange in this style. That is, any options for saving space.
Rustic decor
An apartment or house is decorated with art objects created from tree branches, roots, and bark. Bouquets of dried flowers, unusually shaped stones. All this is not only on tables, but also on open shelves.
Dishes, wall panels: unglazed clay, wooden. Ceramic bells and whistles for children.
There are reed blinds on the windows and reed mats on the floor. Homespun fabrics, rugs.
Walls serve as a backdrop, usually in contrasting color with the ceiling beams.
Textiles for rustic. The style does not imply its abundance. Homespun rugs or mats, curtains, bedspreads, pillows - that's all. Textiles are not an independent decorative element. They perform only a functional role. They choose natural, woven fabrics, mainly with a rough texture. Thin, lightweight fabrics are less common.
Lighting
All lighting is stylized: kerosene lamps, chandeliers with candles, ceiling lamps on a long cord. If a floor lamp is used, then the lampshade is carved or lace, the leg is forged or also carved. The wires are camouflaged with covers and panels. Sockets and switches are hidden as much as possible. It cannot be said that such a home is a kingdom of light, but the lighting must be sufficient, comfortable and functional. In addition to single overhead lighting, zonal lighting is also used, for example, small sconces. It is desirable that the brightness can be adjusted. Rustic art objects are beautiful lampshades made of vines, intertwined roots, branches, in the form of a nest or hut. And also in the form of table and wall candles.
Colors
Rusticism is characterized by soft woody, earthy or sandy tones, diluted with milky or white tones. Accents in the room can be created using grassy, green, blue or muted red shades.
For rustic, choose natural colors, including a maximum of 2-3 shades. The interior of the room perfectly combines beige and terracotta, light yellow and burgundy, brown and canvas, olive and gray or brass and anthracite colors.
Furniture
In a rustic style, furniture items combine natural elegance and a certain amount of brutality. Oak, cherry, pine or beech are used to make elements. The furniture is mostly light or dark brown, complemented by scratches, unevenness, cracks and other imperfections.

Current furniture is a massive dining table with stools, chairs or rustic benches. The rustic interior is also furnished with armchairs and beds with log frames, open shelves and wooden cabinets.
The main features of rusticism in the interior
Let's look at the descriptions of the rustic style and its main features.
The current is as close as possible to nature in its original form with all the pros and cons. It successfully combines the beauty of flora and its carelessness. The rustic style in the interior involves the presence of natural materials, but imperfect forms. There is no place for flashy colors and plastic.
Tree
The main material for implementing the style is wood; and if wood is used, it has knots and even cracks. Most often the wood is not coated with varnish or even sanded, preserving its natural beauty.
At the same time, a porcelain vase with flowers or similar decor can stand on a wooden table in its original form. Such elements make the atmosphere softer and more comfortable. The color of wood varies from dark to light shades. Effectively emphasizes the aging of the material.
Stone
There are also special criteria for the stone. It doesn't have to be expensive with a rich shine. Stone processing is not carried out or it is minimal. It is important to preserve natural shapes and surfaces.
Metal
As mentioned at the beginning of the article, shiny metals are not used. However, iron of dark tones without shine and forging are used. They do not play a key role, but are used in the form of furniture elements - the head of the bed, the leg of a floor lamp, the base of a table.
Furniture
The furniture is predominantly made of wood. Carving is acceptable, but not in abundance. It is most often made from solid wood with an expressive texture or from logs.
Fireplace
It should not be like in a medieval castle or in a modern interior. A rustic fireplace is a home hearth that can serve as a regular stove. The finishing is made of stone.
Lighting
As a stylish accessory, you can install a wooden side lamp or hang an original chandelier made of branches or deer antlers. No less relevant are built-in spotlights.
For rustic, stylized lighting fixtures are selected in the form of kerosene lamps, lamps with long cords or forged candelabra. It is appropriate to decorate the decor with a floor lamp with a carved leg or table lamps with beautiful lampshades made of twigs, roots or vines.

The spacious room is decorated with a massive central chandelier on a long mounting device. If the ceiling height is sufficient, you can install a church lamp with a large number of light bulbs or candles.

Curtains and other textiles
Textile elements allow you to emphasize the rural flavor and add extra charm and comfort to the interior. To decorate a room, a variety of products are used in the form of curtains, pillows, furniture covers, carpet runners, knitted blankets and bedspreads using the patchwork technique.
The photo shows a rustic-style bedroom with a window decorated with thick checkered curtains.
For windows in a rustic-style apartment or house, choose curtains made from natural cotton, linen, wool or silk fabric. Blinds made from reeds or straw would also be appropriate.
The floor in the interior can be decorated with a reed mat, a woven or braided carpet, as well as animal skin or its imitation.

How did the rustic style come about?
The rustic style in the interior appeared and began to be used in the middle of the last century. This is a modified analogue of the American country style with elements of a Russian hut. It is believed that this style originated in the United States and immediately became the traditional style of decorating the homes of middle-class people. Gradually, the upper strata of society began to use the rustic style. In contrast to all modern styles with their abundance of glass and plastic, concrete and chrome parts, bright colors and artificial materials, the rustic style is associated with a cowboy ranch, the smell of wood, cozy evenings by the fireplace and other pleasant moments of life.

Decor and accessories
Objects in the form of wicker baskets, old chests, paintings depicting animals or forest landscapes will be an excellent decor. The decor can be supplemented with an armful of firewood or a coffee table made from an ordinary stump.
The most suitable for rusticism is the use of unglazed clay dishes, ceramic bells, wooden crafts and wicker panels.

It is also appropriate to decorate the design with mirrors in rough frames made of boards, ceramic plates, samovars, flowerpots, tubs and boxes with forged parts.

Photos in the interior of the rooms
Design options for rooms for various functional purposes.
Kitchen
To decorate the walls in a rustic kitchen, wooden panels are often used, the ceiling is decorated with false beams, and parquet or brown tiles are laid on the floor. The room is furnished with a high-quality table, comfortable chairs with thick, stable legs, artificially aged cabinets and all kinds of hanging shelves made of natural wood.
The apron area can be laid with masonry or use tiles and panels with its imitation. It is better to hide household appliances behind the facades of the kitchen unit, and cover the refrigerator with a special film with a wood texture.

Various decor in the form of linen curtains and tablecloths, potholders and towels with ethnic patterns, lace napkins and cast iron cookware will help complete the kitchen interior design.
Bedroom
A large, strong and comfortable bed with a metal frame or a wooden base in the form of a woodpile is installed in the room. Near the bed there are bedside tables that have the most uncouth design. It would be appropriate to replace the chest of drawers with a voluminous chest with forged elements.

To zone the bedroom, you can choose a wooden partition or a wicker screen. For lighting, a wardrobe, a place with a dressing table or a work area are separately equipped with small lamps with wicker lampshades made of wicker.
Rustic in the living room
If possible, the living room is complemented with a fireplace. The portal is laid out with stone or decorated with tiles. The plank floor is decorated with carpets or animal skins, and a massive lamp suspended on chains is placed on the ceiling.

It is appropriate to equip the center of the room with a spacious sofa and armchairs, decorated with pillows or a blanket.
Bathroom
A bathroom with a basic stone or tile finish will look advantageous. Only the ceiling plane, door panels or cabinet can be made of wood.
The sink is mounted in an asymmetrical countertop made of thick logs. The mirror frame is decorated with pieces of real bark or its plastic and rubber imitation. A rustic bathtub is shaped mainly like a wooden tub or is made in the form of a thick brass bowl.
To create a more aesthetic interior, the bathroom is decorated with wicker baskets, ladders that act as hangers and sisal rugs.
Children's room design
The interior is equipped with wicker baskets for toys or open shelving is installed. The bed can be a single-tier or two-tier model in the form of a house with a ladder. It would also be appropriate to decorate a nursery in a rustic style with chests, stump chairs or rocking horses.

Decoration of the hallway and corridor
The hallway and corridor can be decorated using ancient Russian vestibules with wooden walls, a ceiling and a floor lined with ceramic tiles or stone.
A wooden front door often has forged fittings and metal trims. Instead of a hanger, deer antlers are placed in the interior of the corridor, an ordinary bench and a small chest of drawers with a mirror in a massive frame are installed.
Rustic style rules
As follows from the above, creating a true rustic interior is not so easy. For those who strive for naturalness, but are not ready to give up modernity, designers offer a modern rustic style. It differs from classic rustic in the following features:
- decoration uses plaster, artificial wood or stone cladding, imitation or real sheet iron, and sometimes even wallpaper.
- In the ceiling covering, an ordinary smooth plastered ceiling, matte stretch ceiling or ceiling tiles are acceptable.
- For flooring, you can use ceramic tiles with imitation wood or stone , woven carpet, laminate or parquet boards.
- Well-processed, sanded and varnished wood is allowed: walls, furniture or ceiling.
- Glass, strict modern minimalist forms or, conversely, classic ornate ones are allowed in furniture design.
- It is allowed to add details and other styles: furniture and chandeliers made of plastic, a baroque chair, chrome-plated fittings.
- Modern rusticism can be created with the help of only a few catchy characteristic details in combination with furniture of a different stylistic direction in the overall rustic design of the walls, floors and ceilings: a rough dining table, a roughly made cabinet, vases from tin cans , a shabby fireplace, a mirror with a mosaic , etc. d.
- Modern rusticism combines modern and rustic decorative items: antique bedside tables, chests of drawers and chests with high-tech mirrors, modern lamps, products made of plastic, porcelain or shiny metal (hood, refrigerator, bar stools, electric fireplace, decorative dishes).
- Modern rustic, of course, will not give you complete immersion in the atmosphere of rough natural simplicity, but it will allow you to get closer to it.
Selection of houses
In the interior of country buildings, rustic looks especially harmonious. A solid and simple finish in the form of wide boards or lining fits perfectly into the design of a veranda at the dacha. You can choose wicker furniture or use forged items that look advantageous against the background of stone walls. Silk textiles with floral or plant patterns will help add air to the atmosphere and soften the rough color of the style.

The terrace is decorated in a monochrome gray-brown color scheme. Stone and wood are used in large quantities for finishing. The terrace is often equipped with a stove, barbecue or summer kitchen.
Is rustic suitable for an apartment?
Active and large-scale use of stone and wood in the design of space in a rustic style dictates certain rules due to the massiveness and significant weight, and therefore the rustic image of the interior was created primarily for country houses. However, if you like this style, it is quite possible to introduce some rustic style elements into your apartment.
- It is not necessary to lay the walls with natural stone; it is quite possible to focus on one of them using high-quality imitation;
- replace a real fireplace with a chimney with an electric one, but in the right style, or with its imitation;
- instead of natural untreated boards, lay the appropriate type of laminate on the floor;
- installing a stone bathroom in an apartment is impossible, but nothing prevents you from stylishly combining white faience with wooden elements of countertops, screens and cabinets;
- Handmade items will look great in a rustic room. Originality is synonymous with this style.
The rustic style in the apartment does not allow the use of stone and wood on a large scale, however, it is quite possible to introduce certain stylistic details
