Wedding floristry: modern design trends +Video

No wedding is complete without flowers.
Floral decoration of celebrations is called wedding floristry. The origin story dates back to Ancient Rome, when it was customary for newlyweds to hold bouquets of rosemary and garlic. It was considered a symbol of success and wealth. Today it is impossible to imagine any wedding celebration without floral decoration.

Properly chosen and used flowers will decorate any holiday, because modern floristry is not only the bride’s bouquet and the groom’s boutonniere.

Decorating with flowers is a separate fragrant science

Since ancient times, the language of plants has been studied in society, determining the meaning of each plant. With the help of bouquets, people express their feelings to each other. And flower arrangements at a wedding celebration complement the atmosphere of the holiday, and sometimes even create it. Floral compositions can be tabletop, floor, or wall.

They decorate tables, chairs, stairs, dishes, glasses and bottles:

  • Arrangement of ransom and flowers for bridesmaids as decorations
  • Car decor
  • Newlyweds table decoration
  • Design of an area for congratulations and gift giving
  • Buffet and/or dessert table
  • Decorating tables for guests
  • Decoration of the banquet hall

Powdery mood

Delicate classic pink color still remains at the peak of popularity. But for those who want to be in trend, there is an original offer. Still the same pink, but in a slightly different, noble version. Powdery dusty shades are suitable. Garden roses of the appropriate shade will look best in the decor.

Editor's Choice: How to beat procrastination, expert advice

Delicate, unobtrusive compositions on guests’ tables, a few branches decorating the backs of chairs instead of the usual satin bows, an arch with roses that looks like it’s straight from the Garden of Eden – that’s all you need for a perfect wedding. This option is perfect for a celebration in shabby chic style.

The bride's bouquet

The bride is the main decoration of the wedding, so her bouquet is given special attention. It is necessary to take into account the theme of the event, the style of the wedding dress and personal floral preferences. You also need to take into account the time of year. In spring, many people prefer lilies of the valley, daffodils and tulips, in summer - peonies and various wildflowers, in autumn - gerberas and dahlias, in winter - orchids, lilies and roses. Recently, it has been popular to add lilies of the valley, bluebells and even snowdrops to bouquets. Bouquets are made on bouquet holders, on wire and on stems.

Brides use flowers not only for bouquets, but also for hairstyles. Fresh flowers are pinned to hair, attached to hairpins, wreaths are woven from them, and hoops and headbands for wedding hairstyles are decorated.

There are several basic forms of a bridal bouquet:

  • Round
  • Waterfall
  • A drop
  • Biedermeier
  • American style
  • Vegetative style

Azure Dreams

Another fashionable color for this and next year is azure. Florists agree that a wedding in a nautical style should change its usual blue and white colors to more sophisticated options, including the same color of sea wave, azure, emerald and blue lagoon in combination with coral shades.

The decor uses a lot of tropical fresh flowers, greenery, and light fabric elements. Ideally, the wedding should take place on the seashore. Chairs and tables are decorated with chiffon or silk; this is the case when bows would be appropriate. You can pour colorful sand into glass vessels and place it on buffet tables. Scatter small shells and transparent glass pebbles on them. A fresh and very fashionable solution would be a bridal bouquet made of starfish and shells, as in the photo below.

Table decoration for newlyweds

The floristry of the festive table depends on the room, wedding theme, and color scheme. Lighting and room temperature are taken into account when choosing flowers. The tablecloth is decorated with flower garlands, the petals are scattered in random order.

It is preferable to use low bouquets and low vases so that the flowers do not block the newlyweds. Flower balls hanging from the ceiling can liven up a space and create an atmosphere of romance. The wall behind the newlyweds is decorated with flowers depending on the overall decoration of the hall.

On a note. Modern trends involve the use of dried flowers, willow sticks, ears of wheat, and cotton, which create an original and cozy atmosphere.

Rustic with flowers - wedding style

Rustic style is all about simplicity and romance. Distinctive features: elegant, discreet details, casual and light design, natural materials and a charming rustic atmosphere. What flowers to choose in this case?

Suitable field flowers: daisies, cornflowers, lavender, lilies of the valley, bells, poppies, small roses, daisies, cotton, ears of wheat. Sunflower flowers are also quite appropriate in a rustic style. For decoration, you can use moss, branches and dried flowers along with flowers, this will add originality to the composition.

Shades of purple, blue and yellow dominate; traditional white may remain one of the main colors.

Floristry of the hall

Floral arrangements for the wedding hall are in harmony with all other floral decor. When designing, the layout of the room is taken into account.

Florists adhere to basic rules:

  • Form. Columns, railings, arches that are in the hall are decorated and new structures with artificial and fresh flowers are also built.
  • Parallels, in which flower arrangements are arranged strictly in rows, taking into account the shade of the flowers.
  • Vegetative, includes the use of trees, fruits, berries, stones.
  • Decorative decor that uses round-shaped compositions with flowing elements.
  • Formo-linear version using floor floral designs.

It is very important not to overload the wedding hall decor with a large number of floral decorations. The decor can be supplemented with bright details, balls, glitter, but only in moderation.

Decor ideas

When taking an idea with any decor as a basis, it should always be correlated with the chosen wedding style.

Roses, peonies, callas, amaranths, heliconias, and sunflowers are suitable for wedding decoration.

When composing a wedding flower arrangement for a banquet hall, there are four decorative styles:

  1. Parallel - all compositions are arranged in parallel rows (horizontal, vertical or diagonal). In this case, the color palette is built on contrasts or using several shades of the same color.
  2. Decorative – flowers are used to form compositional islands of regular shape. They are evenly spaced around the room; combinations of large and small compositions also look appropriate.
  3. Vegetative - compositions are created on the basis of a decorative style, but using wild, seasonal and dried flowers, indoor plants with spectacular greenery, and various natural materials. Dry branches, berries, fruits, cones, ears of corn, and vegetables are used as the latter. With such a design, it is important to emphasize the beauty of wild nature, its untouched naturalness.
  4. Formo-linear - a combination of art-contemporary and modernist styles. The composition focuses on a large flower, around which accessory plants are collected. The arrangement can be ascending or descending, multi-level, asymmetrical.

Flower arch

The flower arch is suitable for both outdoor and indoor weddings. It adds solemnity and focuses attention on the entrance area. The number of flowers on the arch often determines the cost of the entire composition. Florists recommend combining fresh flowers with artificial ones on this element; florists often use this technique. At the same time, the cost of the product is reduced, and the problem of the seasonality of some flowers, which are simply unavailable at certain times of the year, is also solved.

It is not necessary to fill the entire volume of the arch with flowers. If you use a wicker frame rather than a metal one, it can be decorated with fewer flowers. The decoration on the arch can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical. The spaces between flowers can be decorated with vines, artificial greenery, ribbons, and large beads.

Table decoration for young people

The newlyweds' table is the main place in the hall. During the celebration, all attention is focused on it, so the decoration must be special. The decor should match the overall wedding theme and color scheme. You also need to take into account the temperature and lighting in the newlyweds’ area, based on which the types of flowers are selected.

You should not place tall or bulky compositions on the table. They will interfere with the newlyweds’ communication with each other and guests.

You can take several ideas as a basis for decorating the table:

  • Garlands on the tablecloth.
  • It will look spectacular if the newlyweds’ table is sprinkled randomly or in the shape of a heart with rose petals. Moreover, it will be better if they have different shades.
  • Low bouquets in low vases. Large flower buds can be separated from the stems and placed to float in glass dishes.
  • You can hang several flower balls above the table. They look very romantic and enliven the space.
  • The wall behind the table is decorated in accordance with the style of the room.
  • If the celebration is held outdoors, for example, in a garden, it is worth placing several flowerpots with plants next to the newlyweds’ table.

When decorating, do not forget about moderation. To make the composition look harmonious, you need to combine large and lush buds with the simple texture of the tablecloth material and laconic serving.

Decorating tables and chairs for guests

It is appropriate to place small vases with compact flowers on guest tables. It can also be wicker baskets with flowers, fruits, willow branches. The backs of the chairs can be decorated with small garlands, and the composition can also be fixed on the back of the seat.

There may be candelabra on the tables; in this case, it is recommended to replace bouquets in vases with decorating candlesticks.

Colored weddings are popular when predominantly one shade is used in the decoration. In this case, guest tables can be decorated with flowers of the chosen tone to focus attention on them.

When decorating a themed wedding with flowers, you should focus on the main theme of the celebration. The flowers themselves can be anything, but containers and stands need to be kept in accordance with the theme. Floral arrangements can be placed in glass bottles, wicker baskets, tin cans, etc.

Decorating walls and windows

The decoration of the walls and windows of the wedding hall is the main filling of the festive atmosphere. Floral decor should be in harmony with the design of individual zones and islands.

At the same time, florist-decorators must take into account the layout of the room. The design of the banquet hall will depend on the design style. The decor of walls and windows looks inappropriate when choosing minimalism. Window openings are often decorated with garlands of flowers, decorative arches, and single compositions on curtains or window sills.

Decorating a room with flowers implies balance. Too many floral decorations will overload the interior. It is better to use minimal decoration, but complement it with balloons, ribbons, and sparkles.

For a wedding in a rustic style, you should definitely combine flowers with fabric, burlap, twine, and sewing. Minimalism in design allows for compositions of paper flowers. These can be huge wall panels with solid colors to match the walls or tablecloths.

Photozone

Decorating a photo zone with flowers should also not be overloaded. It could be:

  • A large stand filled with large artificial flowers or a “carpet” of small real ones.
  • A chalk board with flower garlands around the perimeter, and baskets with dried flowers, fresh flowers, and fruits on the floor next to it.
  • Don't forget about evening shots. To get spectacular photos, the photo zone can be decorated with flower arrangements with hidden lighting (garlands, LEDs, neon signs). But in this case it is better to use artificial inflorescences.
  • Swing decorated with flowers, ribbons, glowing garlands.

It is better to choose flowers for the photo zone that are not too bright. If this contradicts the concept of the wedding, it is worth choosing contrasting flowers, for example, if the celebration is in blue tones, the photo zone can be decorated using white or cream buds.

Bouquet and boutonniere for newlyweds

The main decoration of the wedding is the bride. Therefore, special attention is paid to her bouquet. When choosing, it is important to take into account the general wedding theme, the style of the dress and the girl’s personal preferences.

Also, the format of the bouquet will depend on the time of year:

  • In summer, it is appropriate to use compositions based on wildflowers or peonies.
  • In winter, it is better to give preference to roses, lilies and orchids.
  • In spring, it is better to make a bouquet of lilies of the valley, tulips or daffodils.
  • In autumn it is appropriate to use dahlias and gerberas.

The basis is a frame (wire, porta bouquet or stems). Also, the flowers that are used in the bouquet can be duplicated in the bride’s hairstyle and used as an element of a hairpin, wreath, or headband.

The copy of the bouquet that the bride throws to her bridesmaids is made from lifeless flowers.

According to the shape, the bouquets of the main hero of the occasion are of the following types:

  • Round.
  • Teardrop-shaped.
  • Waterfall.
  • Biedermeier.
  • American style.
  • Vegetative style.

The groom's boutonniere, despite its simplicity, is no less important than the bride's bouquet. It is a small bouquet attached to the lapel of the jacket that makes the groom’s image elegant and sophisticated. Usually a boutonniere is a miniature copy of the bride's bouquet. But it can also be made in a custom design, but using the same colors. You can also use a solo flower for the boutonniere, the most prominent one in the entire wedding composition, or use a repeating floral motif.

Wedding accessories

When decorating, flowers are used for various little things and accessories.

In invitations, banquet cards, bonbonnieres, etc.:

  • For banquet numbers and cards, you can use flowers in pots or vases.
  • The seating plan can be a flower stand
  • Invitations can be not simple cards, but mini boxes containing an invitation and a fragrant flower.
  • Bonbonnieres can be made from fresh flowers and plants in pots.

Satin flowers

Flowers made from satin fabric are bright and expressive. The manufacturing technique of these decorations is similar to the previous ones. But, an interesting solution would be to decorate the fabric petals with green satin, which will add richness to the composition. But instead of the middle, you can twist a small piece of fabric into a roll, as if the middle of the flower has not yet opened.

How to make flowers from fabric - use satin:

  • On paper you need to draw petals of different sizes and cut them out.
  • Attach the resulting stencils to the fabric and carefully outline with a felt-tip pen.
  • Cut out about 30 petals, ten of each size.
  • Scorch the edges of the petals over the fire.
  • Twist the middle from a small rectangular piece of satin (also singe the edges in advance).
  • Connect the petals and the center into a flower using a glue gun or thread and needle.
  • If desired, add leaves cut from green satin.
