Boudoir dresses: how and where to choose a product, types of models

Boudoir dress, robe, peignoir

Choosing lingerie for a bride is a very important moment. Everything is important here - beauty, convenience, and sexual attractiveness. This also applies to the things that the young wife will wear on the morning after her wedding night. A husband should not lose interest in his wife, he should still admire her, and elegant clothes contribute greatly to this.

In fact, there are several items of clothing that women put on when getting out of bed:

  • robe;
  • peignoir;
  • boudoir dress.

Robes, of course, can be very beautiful. But it remains home clothes, in which you can safely walk around the apartment, but it’s hardly worth receiving guests. You can make your husband a cup of coffee in a peignoir, but that’s all. But a boudoir dress is more versatile clothing. There are models that can even be considered evening and wedding dresses. In a word, having sewed such a morning outfit, you will feel like, if not a queen, then at least a society lady.

Important! In the old days, when princesses and duchesses entertained guests in their boudoir, they wore something very similar to modern boudoir dresses.

Buy or sew a dress or robe?

In wedding dress stores you will probably find many interesting models of boudoir dresses. The trouble is one thing - like all things for newlyweds, they are most often expensive. Money is never superfluous in a young family. So, if you have a sewing machine and know a little how to use it, it is better to do it yourself. But before you sew a boudoir dress, see what style suits you.

What to choose?

You can always choose a suitable model if you soberly assess the features of your figure. On the first morning, it is especially important to highlight your strengths. The figure can be:

  • slim;
  • slim, but with a large bust;
  • with small breasts but wide hips;
  • complete.

In addition, it is not uncommon for an expectant mother to get married. Is a boudoir dress suitable for her? Undoubtedly. But not the style that slender, graceful young ladies wear.

A slim body

In principle, slender girls can afford anything. Flared skirts, wide sleeves, a peplum belt, and fluffy ruffles look good on them. You can choose a one-piece sleeve or an open-shoulder dress as in the photo.

Important! By the way, those who, due to scoliosis, have one shoulder higher than the other, need the asymmetrical option.

Big breasts

This raises the question: do you want to highlight the beauty of your bust or hide it? In the first case, a deep neckline or V-neck is suitable - you want to emphasize your femininity, right? But if you don’t want too much attention to be paid to your breasts, choose a dress with a yoke or a peplum under the bust.

Wide hips

Wide hips and a slender upper part are a great combination. There is nothing wrong with drawing attention to the lower part of your body. A layered skirt is good for this. But it is better to make the upper part narrow. In general, the dress should look like a ball gown.

The bride is in an interesting position

The expectant mother also wants to be beautiful. And she should not deny herself this. In this case, you should not choose a fitted option. A yoke dress with a wide bottom will suit you, as well as a Greek one with ruching at the shoulders. You can complement it with a beautiful lace belt.

How and where to choose a boudoir dress?

You can choose a dress for the bride's morning to suit your taste in the wedding salon, where other attributes of wedding fashion are presented.

The dress can be long with a train or revealing legs, transparent or satin, with long or short sleeves, emphasizing the slim figure or with a high waist, hiding the silhouette.

You can also sew your own boudoir dress. You can choose a model from a wedding fashion catalogue, and you have the opportunity to customize the dress you like, taking into account your own characteristics and wishes. If the future bride knows how to sew herself, then a piece of her soul will be invested in sewing such an element of the wedding wardrobe; the dress will carry a special, individual energy. You can also use the services of a designer studio, where they can make a boudoir dress to order. The pattern of the product may resemble a peignoir or robe, but due to the fabric and finishing, the effect of an exclusive element of wedding paraphernalia is achieved.

Boudoir dress is a wonderful new tradition of a wedding ceremony, which replaces outdated ransoms and endless feeding of guests. After all, marriage is a celebration of creating a family between two loving people, and the main thing on this day is the emotions and mood of the newlyweds.

Choosing a dress

If you do decide to buy a boudoir outfit, pay attention to some points. By the way, these tips will also be useful when choosing fabric. Need to consider:

  • color;
  • style;
  • material.

Which color is better?

The main rule is that the dress should highlight your skin color. Designers quite often advise choosing a boudoir dress of the same shade as the wedding dress. The bride's dress does not have to be white. However, white also has dozens of warm or cold shades, so you can choose something suitable for both a dark-skinned woman and the Snow Queen.

It is not at all necessary to follow all the advice of professional designers. A boudoir dress can be anything - it all depends on your mood. Of course, pastel colors always look good, but if you are truly happy and want the whole world to rejoice with you, there is nothing stopping you from sewing a morning outfit from something bright and rich. But it is better to choose fabric without a pattern.

Let's talk about styles

What is your character? And what kind of person do you want to be at the wedding and immediately after it? There are many options:

  • you are a cheerful person with a light character;
  • you are serious and do not accept frivolity;
  • you want to emphasize your sexual attractiveness.

Important! In the first case, a model with frills, cap sleeves, and an abundance of lace will be suitable. For a strict woman, it is better to choose a classic straight style with a very high-quality finish. Finally, for those who want to appear relaxed and sexy, you can sew a dress with a long slit and a deep neckline.

Material

Immediately avoid dense, heavy fabrics, even if they look luxurious. This is not the case at all. Suitable for you:

  • fine silk;
  • thin knitwear;
  • tulle;
  • atlas;
  • chiffon;
  • lace fabric.

Types of dresses

Boudoir dresses are the same unique elements of a wedding as the bride’s dresses. Every girl chooses it so that she feels unsurpassed in it.

Most often, girls prefer long dresses in white or cream color. Also very popular is a long train and very long sleeves, which are fixed at the wrists and create the effect of a princess dress.

If a girl has a beautiful figure, she can choose a transparent boudoir dress and combine it with a matching lingerie set. Photos in such an outfit will not only carry the atmosphere through the years, but will also add a touch of piquancy and intimacy to the wedding preparations.

There are also frequent cases when the bride chooses boudoir dresses in an erotic style. They feature rich colors such as red and black, are trimmed with lace and feature deep slits and necklines.

Sew a dress

If you are planning to sew a simple but elegant boudoir dress with your own hands, the master class will take very little time. The main thing is to choose the right fabric.

Important! For a simple style, thin knitwear or crepe de Chine is suitable. The cut should be wide enough - 140 or 150 cm.

Cutting can be done directly on the fabric, for which you will need:

  • a long ruler (it’s best to take a tailor’s meter - the kind that sellers in a fabric store use);
  • pencil, chalk or soap - depending on the color and texture of the material;
  • sharp scissors.

Marking the cut

To sew a loose boudoir dress, you need to know a few measurements:

  • product length;
  • neck girth;
  • armhole height (from the shoulder to the line passing under the chest);
  • waist circumference;
  • the length of the cut at the bottom, if any.

Fabric calculation is extremely simple - two lengths of the product.

Important! This style suits both chubby and thin people. The main advantage of the model is that you can sew an excellent boudoir dress without a pattern at all.

To begin, fold the piece in half so that the edges match and spread it on a large table or floor. The layers can be chipped along the edges so that they do not slip, and then:

  1. Find the middle of the fold and make a mark.
  2. Divide the neck circumference by 4 and add 3 cm to this measurement.
  3. Set aside what you got to the right and left of the middle of the fold.
  4. Make a cut between these new points.
  5. Along the edges, set aside the height of the armhole and also make marks - these points can be connected with lines at the front and back to make it easier to sew on the peplum.
  6. From the cuts, set aside the length of the cut - it can be on one side or both.

Assembly

Assembly of this dress is extremely simple:

  1. First you need to stitch the side seams. Since they go along the edges, they don’t even have to be processed.
  2. But in order to lay the shoulder folds, you will need an assistant. They should be absolutely symmetrical, but they can be directed in different ways - towards the neckline or towards the shoulder. The folds are laid and pinned together.
  3. Try on what you have, adjust if necessary, and then stitch your product along the shoulder seams (more precisely, where they usually go).
  4. We make the second line of folds under the chest. Actually, you don’t need to invent anything - they are already laid along the shoulders, all that remains is to align them and sew them along the line running under the chest in front and behind. That's all a seamstress should do.
  5. Then the “designer” comes into play - the dress needs to be decorated.

Important! The folds closest to the neck should be at a distance of 4-5 cm from the cut so that the neckline can be modeled.

Neck design methods

A boudoir dress is most often decorated with lace. Here, as they say, options are possible - the lace can be matching, contrasting or a slightly different shade. The main thing is that all the lace details on the dress are the same color.

There are several options for neck design;

  • semicircular neckline trimmed with lace;
  • turn-down collar;
  • lace stand;
  • V-neck without lace.

Option 1

For a semicircular neckline, you need to widen the neckline a little and draw an even arc between the extreme points - a little deeper in front than in the back. Next we proceed like this:

  1. If the dress is made of jersey, finish the neckline with an overlocker; for a crepe de Chine dress, hem it with a basting stitch of 0.4 and 1 cm.
  2. Baste not very wide and not particularly stiff lace around the entire perimeter of the neckline, laying it in folds. You need to baste to the wrong side, aligning the straight edge of the lace with the hem seam.
  3. Sew on the lace.

Option 2

A turn-down collar is usually purchased separately, so the neckline is cut according to it. Collars made from Vologda lace look great, and they are usually quite soft.

How exactly to sew depends on the collar model. Sometimes it is sewn onto the finished fabric, sometimes the concave edge is stitched to the neckline, and the seam is basted and ironed from the inside to the side of the dress.

Option 3

The lace stand is made of wide elastic lace, not particularly stiff. There is no need to model the neckline, just cut off a piece of lace along the neckline, the ends are neatly overcast or hemmed, a fastener is made with small buttons or hooks, and then the collar is carefully sewn to the neckline.

Option 4

There is no need to trim the neckline of a boudoir dress with lace! You can make a long cut in the front or back, simply overcast or hem the sections.

Bottom design options

You can also do two things with the bottom:

  • overcast or hem;
  • trim with narrow lace.

For different types of fabrics we do this:

  • Crepe de Chine, silk and other fraying fabrics are hemmed.
  • Knitwear - overcast.
  • As for lace, you can give full rein to your imagination.
  • You can take a thin one and simply sew it along the contour.
  • You can emphasize the cuts by making a wider edging.

Important! Of course, you will need to make a belt from the same lace.

Boudoir dress with layered skirt

This model is made from two types of fabric:

  • tulle;
  • silk or knitwear.

The model will be with an open shoulder. For the top, you will need a basic pattern for a fitted blouse - more precisely, the front and back of it. The pattern of the front part needs to be transferred to a large sheet of paper and a whole part of the shelf should be made from two halves, and then the pattern should be modeled:

  1. From the bottom of one of the armholes, step back 2 cm along the side cut.
  2. Connect this point with an arc to the top of the armhole.
  3. From the bottom of the second armhole, also step back 2 cm along the side cut.
  4. Connect this point with a straight line to the end of the neckline located on the opposite side.
  5. Cut out the part along the contour.
  6. Do the same with the back patterns.

Important! The darts are not transferred anywhere; they must be carefully outlined.

Uncover

For the top you will need a piece of knitwear, thin silk or crepe de Chine 110-140 cm wide. Its length is equal to the distance from the top point of the shoulder to the waist. When working:

  1. Lay out the fabric with the wrong side facing up.
  2. Trace the details, leaving 1.5 cm allowances on all sides.

Top assembly

There is nothing complicated about it. The order will be the most common:

  1. Sew up the darts.
  2. Sew side seams and shoulder seams.
  3. Sew seam allowances.
  4. Hem the cuts.

Skirt

The skirt is cut from tulle. This material comes in different colors. Its main advantage is its large width.

Important! When cutting, it is not necessary to observe the position of the longitudinal and transverse threads.

The skirt is sewn according to the circle skirt pattern. You don’t need a template for this, but it is important to know the radius of the recess and the length of the product:

  1. The fabric can be laid out in one layer and the center can be marked.
  2. From this center, draw a circle with a radius equal to your waist circumference divided by 6.28.
  3. From the same point, draw a second circle, adding the length of the product to the radius of the recess.
  4. Cut out the ring.
  5. There is no need to leave any hem allowance, just a small allowance for the waistband. The second and third layers are cut in exactly the same way.

Important! You shouldn’t decorate tulle with lace, but matching embroidery will look very good.

Belt

It is better to make it from a wide elastic band to match. There will still be a lace belt or something like that on top:

  1. Sew a ring out of elastic, and then sew the top section of the skirt to the waistband. Just remember that the elastic needs to be slightly stretched.
  2. Sew the upper part to the free side.

Important! It is best to use a zigzag in both cases.

Decoration

The only part of such a dress that needs additional decoration is the closed shoulder. It can be issued:

  • embroidery;
  • rhinestones;
  • sequins.

Important! If you no longer have time for this, just pick up a beautiful brooch.
