Today, when decorating holidays, much attention is paid to details. If you want to make the table unusual and stylish, then use a special design called a skirt due to its external similarity with this element of clothing. In the review, I will talk about all the features of this element, and also analyze the process of making it yourself.
Lush frame transforms any table beyond recognition
Buffet table skirts
One of the elements of decorating a banquet table is a buffet skirt - a piece of fabric attached to the tablecloth and covering the legs of the table, as well as the space between them.
For greater decorativeness, the buffet skirt is folded or gathered, complemented with swargs, draperies, bows, flowers, LED strips and other elements. They select it in accordance with the general color scheme of the interior - in the same or contrasting colors with the tablecloth, tablecloth, napkins.
- In creating a festive interior.
- The ability to beautifully combine several tables into one.
- Interior renovation. Decorating tables with buffet skirts is an inexpensive and effective way to update your interior design, allowing you to save on the purchase of new buffet tables.
How to make a table skirt
To make it easier for you, all the work is divided into several stages; complete them in order, and the process of creating stylish decor will not cause any difficulties.
Materials and tools
First, let's look at the materials:
Choose a rubber band width that is slightly larger than the thickness of the table top, this will ensure the best secure fixation.
The color is selected to match the overall design, textile fasteners are available in a wide range of shades, so finding the optimal solution is not difficult.
As for the tools, you need to have the following on hand:
Tips for carrying out work
The recommendations in this section will help simplify and speed up your work:
- To reduce the amount of tulle, purchase a tablecloth in advance in the color of Tutu's skirt . Its length on the sides of the table should be no less than the length of the future decoration; this will help to significantly reduce the consumption of tulle, since the space will not be visible and the bottom will have a dense background in the color of the skirt. The material used to make the tablecloth is not particularly important, the main thing is that it is dense.
- You can only frame on three sides . If you have a square or rectangular table that stands against the wall, then it makes no sense to frame it around the perimeter. In this case, the skirt is constructed on three sides, but the elastic is made over the entire table so that the element is securely held in place. This little trick allows you to significantly save materials.
Taking measurements
At this stage you need to decide on several aspects:
If the framing is not made all the way to the floor, then calculations are made in accordance with the required length, but the margin for the knot is always added in the same way as indicated above.
The stripes should not perfectly match in width, but they should not differ too much, so that the splendor of the decor is uniform along the entire perimeter of the table.
Construction of the skirt
Now let's look at the workflow, it is quite simple and consists of only a few steps:
- A tablecloth is laid on the table. Place it the way it should be when you use the furniture.
- An elastic band is taken and its optimal length is determined. The easiest way is to do the work together in order to quickly carry out all the manipulations. The tape is fixed in the desired position with pins, and all excess is cut off.
- Velcro 10 cm long is sewn to the ends of the tape. It should match the color of the elastic so as not to stand out against its background.
Buffet table skirts, the merit of the invention
In addition to decorating banquets and celebrations, buffet skirts are used to decorate registration tables and buffet counters, stages and podiums. They are often used in the design of advertising stands, presentations, and meeting tables.
To attach the buffet skirt to the table, use:
- special plastic clips are a mobile, quick and easy way of fastening. Not suitable for tables with a tabletop thickness exceeding 4 cm;
- self-adhesive Velcro tape is a cheaper method of fastening compared to clips. Applicable only in cases where buffet skirts are used on an ongoing basis, for example, in restaurants and cafes. The disadvantage of this method is that the Velcro tape can damage the end part of the tabletop;
- simple sewing or special decorative pins are a simple and inexpensive method of fastening for those cases when a buffet skirt is used to decorate a table for one time, for example, during one evening.
A banquet is held in the restaurant. The tables are laden with delicious dishes. The filled dishes are pressed against one another so that the tablecloth under them is not visible. This is where table linen with the beautiful name “buffet skirt” comes into its own...
As the name itself suggests, this accessory is intended for buffets and banquets, that is, for those occasions when people have a snack while standing.
The main beauty of buffet skirts is the ability to go around several tables and turn them into one. Even old and ugly tables are transformed - the overall appearance becomes festive and rich.
But the question arises: why do you need some kind of skirt if you can sew an ordinary wide tablecloth? We answer. Firstly, a wide tablecloth has long corners - if it covers the legs of the table, then these corners inevitably end up on the floor. Secondly, a tablecloth 2.5 - 3 m wide is expensive, and even if you cut its corners in a semicircle, it will soon become clear: spoiling an expensive tablecloth for the sake of one buffet table is pointless...
The size of the skirt is usually determined by the dimensions of the table. The most optimal and common option is 3 - 5 m (such skirts are easier to wash). Previously, in order not to sew skirts for several tables, they used one - 20 - 25 m wide. However, there was too much hassle with washing, transportation... Therefore, restaurateurs eventually abandoned such incredible sizes. The length of the buffet skirt should be five centimeters less than the height of the table so that visitors do not step on its edges. The height of the table usually does not exceed 80 cm, therefore, the average height of the skirt is 70 - 72 cm. The main thing in a buffet skirt is the folds, without them it will lose its beauty. To make them deep, you need to spend three times more material on the product, that is, if the length of the belt attached to the edge of the table is 30 cm, then the length of the lower part is 90. The depth of the folds is from 7 to 12 cm. It only seems so. that “putting on” a skirt is very difficult. Of course, the old-fashioned method - needles, pins and buttons - will require some effort, but they can be completely avoided by using so-called clips. They are securely attached to the table, and the skirt is put on them using Velcro sewn to its belt. This method of fastening is mobile, convenient and fast, and thanks to the elasticity of the clip, the skirt can be attached to tables of any shape. The only negative is that the clips are only suitable for those tabletops with a thickness of no more than 4 cm. If the board is thicker, additional belts will be required, which are attached to the tablecloth with pins. Fabric plays an important role in sewing buffet skirts. It should be soft and elastic, because if the skirt is rough and dense, then the table will look ugly. A good buffet skirt, like an ordinary women's skirt, flows softly, shimmers, and does not hang sloppily from the table. However, the fabric should not be transparent, nor too soft and thin - frequent use and washing will quickly ruin it. Most often, polyester is used for sewing skirts, although some restaurateurs still prefer thinner fabrics - they take into account not only aesthetics, but also weight, because light skirts are more convenient to take to outdoor banquets. And one more thing: the buffet skirt must shine, at least a little, since this is its necessary attribute.
When choosing the color of buffet skirts, designers adapt to the interior of the restaurant and its overall palette. In principle, skirts can be of any color and shade - there are no standards here. They say that each color has its own symbolism: white - freshness and innocence, yellow - separation, black - detachment, and burgundy arouses different desires in a person, including the desire to eat. Various combinations are now in fashion - a yellow skirt with a blue tablecloth (and vice versa), gold and white. True, light-colored fabrics are rarely used - they are too easily soiled.
Calculation of the length of the skirt depending on the perimeter of the table.
Drapery for a wedding table, general rules for making a buffet skirt
The buffet skirt is made from solid fabrics of satin, satin, organza or other fabric.
Pleating is a classic design option for a furry skirt. To decorate a standard table designed for 4 people, you will need about 8 m of fabric, for a table for 8 people - about 11 m of fabric.
Since the standard width of the fabric is most often 1.5 m, and the height of the table is 75-80 cm, the selected piece of fabric must be cut in half lengthwise, and then stitch the short sections together, resulting in a solid, very long fabric.
The resulting seam is the middle of the buffet skirt and serves as a guide when placing the finished product around the perimeter of the table. To prevent the sections of the panel from fraying during the use of the skirt, it is recommended to decorate them - overlaying, sewing with a zigzag, tucking or finishing with a roller or trim.
The next stage is laying folds or gathers - their width can be arbitrary. The folds are laid to the left or right, secured with pins, which must be placed perpendicular to the top cut, 1.5 cm away from it. To secure the folds, they are sewn on a machine with a double stitch, running along the top edge. The indent width is optional. If you fasten the folds close to the top edge, you will get a neat skirt with gently flowing folds, the upper part of which can be left open or additionally decorated with a naperon, lambrequin, drapery, ribbon, or flowers.
In addition, you can decorate the upper edge of such a buffet skirt with a belt, sewing it on top and thereby solving the issue of additional decoration at the junction of the buffet skirt and tablecloth. If you secure the folds at a distance of 5-7 cm from the top edge, an additional ruffle will be formed, which can be beautifully played out.
If instead of pleats on the buffet skirt, gathers are made, then to create them you can use curtain tape, simply stitching it along the long edge of the fabric and pulling it with laces to the desired length, straightening it, evenly distributing the gathers.
Buffet table skirts, fold options photo
Of course, folds, gathers and puffs are the main decoration of a buffet skirt. When creating folds on a buffet skirt, they are laid either in one direction or in two, as if meeting each other.
- One-sided folds, called “accordion”, can be located along the entire length or in groups. They should have the same depth and width, and be at the same distance from each other. When calculating the material, it should be taken into account that, in order to obtain deep, beautiful folds, the depth of a one-sided fold should be twice as large as its finished width. If there is not much fabric, folds can be made into shallow folds - “pleated”. Place one-sided folds along the front side of the fabric and secure at the top with a stitch (if the preparation of the buffet skirt is made in advance) or with pins (if the skirt is made immediately on the table, without preliminary preparation).
- Double-sided folds can be bow pleats (“Box 2”) or counter pleats (“Box 3”). They are made according to the same principle - the folds are laid towards each other. If the folds of folds facing each other are located on the front side, such folds are called counter folds, if they are located on the wrong side of the skirt, such folds are called bow folds. Just like one-sided ones, this type of folds can be located in groups or along the entire perimeter of the skirt; their depth is equal to twice the finished width.
- A more complex technique for decorating a buffet skirt is puffs. They are done by hand, often preparing the buffet skirt in advance. The most popular types of puffs are diamonds, braids, waffles, zigzag and others. An example of making puffs on a buffet skirt is shown in the video below.
DIY buffet table skirt:
When creating a buffet skirt, the correct material is of great importance. The fabric for a buffet skirt should be light and elastic, drape well, keep its shape, and not wrinkle. Based on these requirements, polyester fabrics, tulle, organza, stretch satin, and stretch athlps are most often used to create buffet skirts. All these fabrics drape perfectly and are laid in beautiful folds, and are also quite affordable.
choosing a skirt model
- A win-win option is always models of buffet skirts with deep one-sided or double-sided pleats.
- Buffet skirts with 2-3 rows of flounces, as well as those decorated with ruffles or fringe, look romantic.
- Buffet skirts with puffs look elegant.
- Horizontal and asymmetrical folds will give the buffet skirt a unique originality. The main thing to remember is that you should not choose such models for tables that are oval, round, or have rounded corners.
calculation of the amount of fabric
The amount of fabric required to create a buffet skirt depends on the length of the table, the number and depth of the folds.
The average depth is 6-12 cm. The required amount of fabric is calculated based on the ratio 1:2.5 or 1:3. As a rule, sections 6-9 m long are used to make a buffet skirt.
Another important point is the height of the skirt. It should be 3-5 cm less than the height of the table legs, so as not to disturb guests and get less dirty. The exception is the buffet skirt, used to decorate the wedding table at which the newlyweds will sit.
In this case, the skirt can be much longer. This allows it to be beautifully laid out and draped, and decorated with arrangements of flowers and candles.
step-by-step instructions for a DIY buffet skirt
A pleated buffet skirt can be made in two ways - by laying them on the fabric in advance or as you decorate the table.
The first method is good because by making the preparation in advance, you can beautifully decorate the table in a matter of minutes.
The advantage of the second method is that it completely eliminates the possibility that the skirt will not fit a particular table.
Below is a step-by-step description of how to create a buffet skirt with preliminary folding.
- Cut the fabric in half lengthwise and sew the resulting 2 cuts together into a single fabric.
- Finish the edges of the panel around the perimeter with an overlocker or by sewing a hem seam with a closed cut.
- Place folds 7 cm wide to the left, having previously made markings on the fabric. Step width = 14 cm. Secure the sweets with pins.
- Double stitch along the top edge, finally securing the pleats to the skirt.
- Sew decorative ribbon along the top edge of the buffet skirt so that its ends can then be tied with a bow.
How to make folds from a single piece of fabric right while decorating the table is shown in detail in the video below.
Features of this decor option
First, let's look at all the features and advantages of table skirts, and there are many of them:
- This decoration is great for weddings, birthdays and other celebrations . Of course, this option is ideal for family holidays or holidays for girls and women.
Such solutions are ideal for little princesses
- A table that is decorated in this way is not intended for seating guests . It is not very convenient to sit under such a fluffy skirt, so this solution is used for buffets and for placing snacks or other dishes that everyone comes up and takes on their own.
The Tutu skirt (as this option is called) is ideal for sweets and dishes that everyone takes for themselves
- The lush frame is made of satin or organza. These materials create volume and at the same time retain their shape well and do not sag over time. In addition, the entire decor weighs very little, which is also important if it needs to be transported or placed on not very durable structures.
- You can choose different colors. You decide for yourself which color will best suit the decor and holiday, and purchase the material from which the decor is made; the most popular solutions are turquoise and pink. I will discuss all the features of the workflow below, but you need to decide in advance which shade will be the most effective.
The appearance of the design largely depends on the color, so its choice should be taken responsibly
- This design is rare . Therefore, all guests will appreciate it; girls especially like such solutions, because it makes the atmosphere romantic and luxurious.
- To make a table skirt like this, you don’t need to be an experienced seamstress or have any special education . You can even do without a sewing machine; the set of accessories necessary for work is so simple that it can be found in every home, even if you do not sew.
- The frame can be either plain or colored . You choose the color yourself, so nothing limits your imagination; you can realize various ideas if it fits into the concept of the holiday for which the decoration is being prepared.
You can make a multi-colored skirt, such solutions are ideal for children's parties
- The finished product can be used an unlimited number of times . It is made according to the size of the tabletop and it is better to choose the standard option, then you can adapt the skirt for other tables with the same dimensions.
- The frame is fixed to the tabletop using an elastic band . This ensures a simple process of installing and removing the element, everything takes just a few minutes, so the process of decorating the room will become much easier and faster.
- The shape of the table is not important . It is no more difficult to make a spectacular decoration on a round or oval table than on a square or rectangular one. The technology is always the same, only the length of the elastic band that is attached to the tabletop is different.
Making a Tutu skirt on a round table is no more difficult than on a square or rectangular one
Remember that the frame only covers the sides of the table, so you should always cover the tabletop with a tablecloth to give the finished result a finished look.
