What to do before the wedding
In Kyrgyzstan, the groom can voluntarily refuse to kidnap the bride. In this case, he must inform his parents about his decision. After which he goes to woo the bride's relatives. Weddings in Kyrgyzstan have, in some cases, retained the tradition of paying a bride price. It bears a special name in the country “Kalym”. The pomp of the ritual depends on the material well-being of both families. In more ancient times, if a man did not have sufficient material savings for a ransom, he could not marry. However, the groom could work off the ransom price at work with the bride's father. Seeing off the young bride
There is a custom in the country that makes a girl a stranger in her own family after the wedding ceremony. Because of this, her family arranges a so-called send-off. In which not only family, but also close friends can take part. Before leaving for the house of a new family, the bride must go around her old relatives one by one and say goodbye to them.
The tradition of seeing off is called “Kyz Uzatuu” in Kyrgyzstan, during which a feast is held with noisy fun, games and competitions with memorable gifts. During the ritual, the bride is, as it were, braided so that she becomes a faithful wife and in the future a good mother.
Traditional wedding dresses
The traditional wedding dress of the country's bride is white and quite long. Traditional patterns are embroidered on it, and the decor is also complemented with various sparkles.
Unlike the bride's outfit, the groom's suit is made mainly of velvet. The set consists of outerwear, which is belted with a belt made of genuine leather. The edges of the costume are usually embroidered in a traditional style; the outfit is additionally decorated with gold trim and decoration made of precious stones.
In the modern era, traditional outfits are found among adherents of ancient customs. But for the most part, young people prefer a replacement in the form of modern suits for the groom and a white wedding dress for the bride. It is traditionally white, but the girl can choose any other color she wishes; the groom's suit is usually black.
Carrying out a wedding ceremony and its nuances
The groom's path to the bride's house is accompanied by his brother's wife and his comrades. The girl in this one. Existing bans
After the wedding ceremony, traditions impose certain prohibitions on the young girl. For example:
- It is forbidden to sit with your back to your spouse’s relatives;
- sit with legs extended;
- there is a ban on loud conversations of the bride;
- It is forbidden to call the spouse’s relatives by name;

Sometimes longer deadlines were observed. In rare cases, instructions to avoid contact were given for life; sometimes they were removed after the birth of the first child.
An interesting custom was that the young woman did not previously have the right to call her husband’s relatives by name, even when she was already in old age, the head of the clan. In the modern generation, the tradition is followed for a couple of weeks before the wedding; in a number of families it is observed only during the celebration itself. In some cases, wives even address their husbands as “you” after several years of marriage, but this tradition is gradually giving way to modern customs.
The Kyrgyz wedding today is a simplified version of a more ancient rite. The surviving rituals give the people of the country their own flavor and historical value.
Maksat Sadyrbekov
Singer and former lead singer of the Non Stop duet Maksat Sadyrbekov married makeup artist Aisulu Moldalieva. The wedding took place on June 6 in one of the restaurants in Bishkek.
