What to do before the wedding

In Kyrgyzstan, the groom can voluntarily refuse to kidnap the bride. In this case, he must inform his parents about his decision. After which he goes to woo the bride's relatives. There is a custom in the country called “Soiko Salu”. Its essence boils down to the fact that after the consent of the bride and her relatives to the wedding, the groom puts on gold earrings for the chosen one, which is a sign of the woman’s engagement. You can ransom the bride using the following methods:

  • cattle, which will be useful on the farm;
  • ordinary money;
  • gold and jewelry.

Weddings in Kyrgyzstan have, in some cases, retained the tradition of paying a bride price. It bears a special name in the country “Kalym”. The pomp of the ritual depends on the material well-being of both families. In more ancient times, if a man did not have sufficient material savings for a ransom, he could not marry. However, the groom could work off the ransom price at work with the bride's father. Previously, bride price was passed down through generations from father to children, who continued to observe this tradition.

In modern Kyrgyzstan, wedding expenses are paid by the groom. In turn, the girl’s family prepares “Sep,” that is, collects a dowry for the man’s family. Typically, relatives sew carpets and do handicrafts to create the basis of a dowry.

Previously, in the process of preparing for the wedding, spouses gave each other national costumes. Nowadays dresses and outfits of European style are accepted as gifts, but you can also give suits according to the old tradition.

seeing off the bride in Kyrgyzstan

Seeing off the young bride

There is a custom in the country that makes a girl a stranger in her own family after the wedding ceremony. Because of this, her family arranges a so-called send-off. In which not only family, but also close friends can take part. Before leaving for the house of a new family, the bride must go around her old relatives one by one and say goodbye to them.

The tradition of seeing off is called “Kyz Uzatuu” in Kyrgyzstan, during which a feast is held with noisy fun, games and competitions with memorable gifts. During the ritual, the bride is, as it were, braided so that she becomes a faithful wife and in the future a good mother.

Traditional wedding dresses

The traditional wedding dress of the country's bride is white and quite long. Traditional patterns are embroidered on it, and the decor is also complemented with various sparkles.

Unlike the bride's outfit, the groom's suit is made mainly of velvet. The set consists of outerwear, which is belted with a belt made of genuine leather. The edges of the costume are usually embroidered in a traditional style; the outfit is additionally decorated with gold trim and decoration made of precious stones.

In the modern era, traditional outfits are found among adherents of ancient customs. But for the most part, young people prefer a replacement in the form of modern suits for the groom and a white wedding dress for the bride. It is traditionally white, but the girl can choose any other color she wishes; the groom's suit is usually black.

Carrying out a wedding ceremony and its nuances

The groom's path to the bride's house is accompanied by his brother's wife and his comrades. The girl in this one. At the entrance, the bride's family greets the groom's relatives, but the bride herself is not shown. In order to see the bridegroom, the groom’s family will have to pay a ransom, the so-called “Corunduk”. At the same time, the bride’s family informs the groom that without a ransom he will not see his betrothed.

At the groom’s house, the bride is placed behind a special screen called “Koyoshgyo”. The girl must bow to each guest, and he will bless her in return. This wedding bow in Kyrgyzstan is called “Zhugunuu”. It is a measure of the bride’s upbringing, as well as her symbol of respect for the guests of the ceremony. The guest to whom the bride bowed should make a warm wish regarding her future life in a new family. With the help of this tradition, you can establish warm ties with your immediate environment.

Next comes the viewing of a young girl, which in culture is called “Kelin Korru”. The process is followed for several days. On the first day, according to tradition, the mother-in-law must put her first white scarf on the bride's head. After the ceremony, the bride should keep it as an important and valuable thing. After evening falls, the young man performs a marriage according to Sharia, which is called “Nike Kyyuu”. After this, the newlyweds visit relatives, tell them the news, and in return receive blessings and gifts.

First night after marriage

In Kyrgyzstan, there is a well-known tradition according to which newlyweds show the sheet after their first wedding night. From it you can understand how chaste the bride led before the wedding. If she was modest enough, then evidence of this will be a real source of pride for her parents. The groom's parents, after witnessing the bride's modesty, often walk with their heads held high. In modern Kyrgyzstan, especially in cities, tradition is becoming irrelevant. But in small settlements, this ritual has a serious impact on the reputation of the young, and significant sums are often paid for its proper implementation.

Now the country's traditions are undergoing a number of changes. But there are also those people who want to pass them on to the younger generation and preserve their roots. They realize the importance of preserving rituals and preserving the national flavor of the people.

Kazakh and Kyrgyz weddings are distinguished by beshbarmak - showman from Bishkek February 19, 2021, 01:28

A well-known showman from Bishkek, a former member of the KVN team “Asia MIX” Ruslan Khalmurzin told in an interview with Sputnik-Kyrgyzstan how weddings in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan differ.

“The traditions are very similar. The main difference is that in Kyrgyzstan beshbarmak is served at the end of the event, and there at the beginning. Kazakhstan has more cities, money, and oil. They really like to invite Russian stars there. On Friday and Saturday, almost half of Moscow bohemia is in Kazakhstan. By the way, they will be more happy with Kairat Nurtas than with Eros Ramazzotti! Families take pictures with him. He’s a cool guy and will save any event,” said the showman.

According to him, they pay more in Kazakhstan. “In Bishkek it’s 500-800 dollars per evening, the figure is higher there. Kazakhstan has more natural resources and people. Once at one event, I joked that if we beat the visiting team in the competition, we would go on vacation to Dubai at their expense. At this moment a man stands up: “Do you want to go to Dubai?” Then he calls his assistant and hands us ten thousand dollars! But the crisis was still felt in Kazakhstan,” says Khalmurzin.

The showman also shared the secret of how to become a successful presenter. “Here you need to have not only intelligence, a sense of humor and vocabulary. It is also important to be a very good psychologist. Sometimes I can tell by looking at which guest’s mood is “sitting”. Sometimes it is clear that the parents of the bride and groom are not very happy about the wedding. This energy is in the air. I had the following situation: I’m officiating a wedding in Almaty, the celebration is luxurious - there are many invited stars, the tables are crowded... I invite my parents to the stage, the mother of the groom and the parents of the bride come out. When the mother-in-law took the microphone, there was such melancholy and bitterness in her voice! She said something like, “Son, I hope you don’t regret it. In any case, I will support you. Congratulations". We were all shocked. There was deathly silence. Then I somehow managed to stir people up, but... when I arrived home, I couldn’t sleep for a long time. In general, it is not easy to work as a showman. There are overly formal weddings when 15 assistants come up to me and say: “Today there will be such and such a person, he should be introduced like that.” The VIPs themselves are quite adequate - they will hug you and laugh, but their assistants are simply the personification of vanity,” he shared.

Khalmurzin said that he loves inappropriate humor. “A couple of years ago we launched the “Surprise Yagofarov” competition on Instagram in honor of my friend the magician Ildar Yagofarov. We did weird, stupid tricks. Timur Rodriguez, Lera Kudryavtseva and Alexander Revva took part in this. One day I was driving through the center of Bishkek, and an idea came to my mind. He ran out of the car, turned on the camera and said: “Hello everyone, this is the show “Surprise Yagofarov”, and I’m fighting for the main prize - getting into the “Golden Ring” ensemble.” Now I’ll guess the names of these girls.” Completely unfamiliar girls were passing behind me, and I shouted at them in the back: “Ignat, Vitya!” They turned around. It was very funny, the video went viral. I won the competition.

I have been a participant in the #surprisinggofarova project for a long time. Try to show everyone and personally @yagomagic your magical magic. Very soon @yagomagic will award a prize of 100 thousand tenge to the winner.

Existing bans

After the wedding ceremony, traditions impose certain prohibitions on the young girl. For example:

  • It is forbidden to sit with your back to your spouse’s relatives;
  • sit with legs extended;
  • there is a ban on loud conversations of the bride;
  • It is forbidden to call the spouse’s relatives by name;
  • especially an eyesore for the older generation.

After the wedding, the newlywed must call her husband’s relatives “tergoo.” An early tradition involves avoiding contact with the spouse's older relatives for a year. Sometimes longer deadlines were observed. In rare cases, instructions to avoid contact were given for life; sometimes they were removed after the birth of the first child.

An interesting custom was that the young woman did not previously have the right to call her husband’s relatives by name, even when she was already in old age, the head of the clan. In the modern generation, the tradition is followed for a couple of weeks before the wedding; in a number of families it is observed only during the celebration itself. In some cases, wives even address their husbands as “you” after several years of marriage, but this tradition is gradually giving way to modern customs.

The Kyrgyz wedding today is a simplified version of a more ancient rite. The surviving rituals give the people of the country their own flavor and historical value.
