Most of us, looking at a couple of wedding photos of our grandparents, think about how interesting it would be to see a video of the big day. What young and close people looked like in the past, what they talked about, what they laughed at and what music they listened to. Nowadays there is such an opportunity; we can capture any moments of our lives in photos and videos. How we are working?

I don’t recommend renting in an apartment, it looks bad. But a hotel is a good option, because at the same time you can take care of the groom’s preparations.

If the gathering places for the bride and groom are far from each other, then I recommend hiring a second cameraman for parallel shooting.

Wedding videography includes both staged and reportage shots. I have interesting props for various wedding scenes. Filming always takes place with 2-3 cameras + additional video light (if necessary) + interchangeable lenses to insure against equipment breakdowns, memory cards running out of stock, etc.

Camera for a wedding photographer

Continuing the series of publications from the “wedding photographer” series, we decided to strike a balance between the most popular cameras among wedding photographers, as well as promising models, in order to understand what is and will be used to shoot weddings, both here in Russia and abroad . Before moving on to the list itself, you must first determine what requirements are placed on the camera in order to understand why different cameras are included in the list. Life for wedding photographers is not easy, so their cameras often have a hard time, and in most cases, they are looking for a camera that is not the coolest in functionality, but also not top-end in price - as a rule, these are full-frame budget models, because there is no need for super speed, but You need versatility for studio-quality shots (shooting with ambient light) and good performance in the dark (restaurants often have dark walls and no ceilings).

There is one more aspect: the price of a camera should not be exorbitant, because often photographers buy not one, but two.

So, the requirements for a wedding photographer’s camera are as follows:

• unpretentiousness (moisture protection, a metal case is desirable, resistance to temperature changes)
• reliability (no failure, no glitches, endurance of the battery and the camera itself under heavy load during the day)
• good autofocus (fast and accurate, tracking is desirable)
• average burst shooting speed (3-5 frames are optimal)
• fast lenses prevail over high-performance bodies
• full frame desirable
• works well in low light
• correct rendering of skin tones
• show off

Like any working device, there are no weight requirements, which is why mirrorless cameras do not have any advantage in choice, so the choice falls on time-tested DSLR cameras. Full frame is also not a “must-have” here, but we recommend it due to the possibilities of a larger tonal range at the output, flexibility in processing and higher-quality matrices not only in terms of nominal characteristics. Canon has no equal when it comes to working with skin tones - which is why their “nickels” are in the statistical majority. However, with the right hands, correction of facial tones is quite possible on both Nikon and Sony, which expands the range. The losers are the outsiders who are not part of the “big three”—wedding vendors practically don’t have them, and it’s difficult to name a single factor. It is no coincidence that the last factor is written “show-off” - ask any couple what kind of camera a photographer should have, and they will, without a doubt, answer “Mark” (the smarter ones - “Canon Mark”), having no idea that this is not even a model .

At the same time, cropped cameras are increasingly being squeezed out of the segment, having only one serious advantage: for the price of one full-frame camera, you can buy two of them, which increases the reliability of getting frames at a wedding exactly four times. The problem for the poor is that the wedding dresser knocks off a full-frame camera in just one or two shoots.

So, a list of cameras for a wedding photographer :

1. Canon 5D Mk III (this is “Mark”, although Canon only designates the next version). The default choice: convenient and reliable, not yet overwhelmed even by the second number, which is thicker, more powerful, and faster. All other things being equal, it has an optimal design: inexpensive for its functionality, iron-clad, full-frame, renders skin tones well. The disadvantages are slow autofocus and killer ergonomics, which infuriates not only Nikonists, but also representatives of the Canon camp.
2. Nikon D800 (available in variation E, which is better, but due to the price and lack of understanding of sellers it sells worse). A real workhorse: comfortable, reliable, fast, with wild resolution, but without brakes, loaded with “don’t play around” functionality, with tenacious autofocus and a convenient light control system, with or without synchronizer. It's inferior to the first number in terms of show-off, price and work with skin tones.
3. Nikon D3 (from the “oops – the old man is still walking!” series). Terminator: a submachine gun camera that managed to push its main competitor (“one” from the previous release) out of third place, because that one became decrepit, and for some reason this one didn’t, has the best autofocus of the trio and a matrix that will still give both of them a head start darkness, despite the fact that the files on it simply fly while being processed. The only drawbacks are age - you understand that over time the old man will have to be buried.
4. Canon 7D (replacement No. 1). An idiot's dream: fast, with accurate autofocus, iron-clad and impressive-looking, no less impressively leading a fight - if it had a full frame, it would get first place, it works well with facial tones, and the price is generally a sight for sore eyes. The only disadvantage is the cropped matrix.
5. Nikon D7000 (replacement No. 2). Miracles on turns: fast, with autofocus from older models, flash control is built in, compact, lightweight, with a light price and a cool matrix, which is second only to the D7100. The disadvantages are the crop matrix, a body based on 3 metal plates, and not the most correct work with facial tones.
6. Sony a99 (from the “neither for yourself nor for others” series). Aliens: strange but true, the third Japanese company is slowly managing to win its place in the sun, thanks to its rich functionality - full frame, autofocus and shooting speed, convenience, built-in stabilizer, folding screen, built-in flash control system. The disadvantages are not the best autofocus and the lack of an optical viewfinder and show-off.
7. Canon 6D / Nikon D600 (contender #1/2). Reinforcements arrived
   : cameras made to replace numbers 4 and 5 of both representatives, which do not find a place for themselves only because they are losing a little to both, but due to the full frame they will eat up the shares of both, most likely, already this year . The difference in price will be compensated by a doubling of the frame area and more meaningful shooting.
8. Nikon Df (contender #3). Dark horse
   : this mutant boldly aims for third place, or even first, while smart guys from the opposite camp run to shake their pants from what they saw. A miracle almost from Shelley’s book, with good shooting speed, autofocus and a large matrix, lightweight and compact, it produces fast-processing 16 megapixel images, magic pixels are shot in the dark. The disadvantages are poor design, cropped phase sensor and plastic construction.

It’s worth taking a closer look at the shortcomings - in fact, they are not that significant, despite what has been said, and the right photographer can easily compensate for them with his hands. Autofocus - with patience and eyes, transmission of facial tones - with an extra slider in the converter and eyes, a cropped sensor with the ability to shoot correctly and creatively, you cannot compensate only for the price and plastic design, but both can be beaten off, as photographers say.

Please note that the last two positions are temporary; these devices have yet to rise and become either replacement or main ones. Wedding walk

The walk is done exclusively for photo and video shooting, so it must be discussed in detail with the videographer. These should be beautiful, aesthetic places. After all, the video and photographs from the walk are the most beautiful of wedding photographs.

In order to get more varied shots, I recommend choosing several locations for a walk.

An important point - you need to think about what the guests will do during the walk.

A wedding is first and foremost a holiday, and therefore my team and I are always dressed neatly and beautifully. My dress code is vest + shirt (or jacket).

“Clean” is guaranteed (in the wedding video and wedding film) - the recording will be made directly from the presenter’s microphone. Those. there will be no extraneous noise, the sound of dishes, unnecessary voices, crying children, etc.

You can choose the style of the wedding video yourself, or shoot in a more reportage style, “ capturing real emotions ”, or a more staged style to add artistry and a “ cinematic quality ” (i.e., like in a movie)

A second operator is also needed when several important simultaneous events occur, for example, during registration, to simultaneously film both the bride and groom and the emotions of the guests. It is difficult for one operator to do this because Several important events occur simultaneously at different points on the site. And if there is one operator, usually only the bride and groom are filming. And the emotions of guests are only when they congratulate. The second operator is usually put in charge of feedback and the shooting turns out to be more emotional.

But it cannot be said that 2 cameramen always shoot better than one cameraman. Much depends on the preparation and on what technical specifications the first operator gives. Therefore, 1 good cameraman will shoot better than two less experienced ones.

If you have strict budget restrictions with one cameraman, you can also shoot beautifully, but for a video I recommend more staging. When I shoot alone, I always use several cameras - one on a tripod, the other in my hands (or 2 on a tripod and 1 in my hands).

First wedding day

Customers have been found, equipment has been prepared. The first day of work as a videographer is ahead.

Look good

This is part of a professional attitude. People working at a wedding must fit into what is happening. A great example is the photographers at the Cannes Film Festival. The videographer can easily get into the photos. Therefore, clothes should be discreet, and the whole look should be formal. A separate conversation is shoes. Comfortable, because you have to stand on your feet for ten hours. In addition, it’s good if you can quickly change shoes (useful, for example, at a buyout).

No skirts for camera girls (unless the wedding is in folk style)!

How to behave correctly

It all usually starts with getting ready for the bride, and if the bride dresses at home, you can find yourself in an unreal whirlpool of worries, fuss and preparation. At first it’s even awkward to enter such a “holy of holies.” But very quickly the excitement recedes. You need to behave calmly and confidently. Everyone is waiting for the video. Say hello, perhaps introduce yourself to the parents, discover the bride. And shoot quickly: the most valuable and beautiful shots of the training camp are always in the morning.

After all, preparing for a wedding is an amazing, magical time and it should be easy and relaxed... But, alas, this myth that the wedding planner will only rip off money is in the air.

Remembering that meeting, I, of course, agreed to help. But like any wedding planner, the first question I asked was: what is the budget? After all, the preparation of the event directly depends on this. From choosing a restaurant, where I advise you to start preparing, to choosing a stylist who will help you be irresistible on the most fabulous day of your life. Yes, yes, absolutely fabulous! Do you remember what fairy tales were read to you as a child? What do you remember? What images are born in your head? So... your wedding is your fairy tale, which you will want to re-read again and again, so that it is captured, you should not give up wedding photographs or videos.

Often, in the process of preparation, many newlyweds think about what they can save on... To my chagrin, they often think: to have beautiful photographs or videos... Several times I met people who did not understand at all why they needed this expense on video and completely abandoned video shooting .

Absolutely, you cannot choose between photos or videos! Believe me, you can order a cake that is not three-tiered, you can refuse a cover band or even an expensive dress, but there are three pillars on which any wedding rests: the host, the decor and the photographer with the cameraman. I will talk about the advantages and necessity of the first two next time. In the meantime, let's figure out what photography and video are. Photography instantly captures the “moments” of life, your emotions, your state... This is a mirror, no, not of the soul, but of life.

And I'm sure you'll want to turn the pages of your book many, many times. And I’m sure you will want not only to see the emotions of those days, but also to be there again...

Write a chronicle of your life, capture the moments, I know that you would be happy not only to look through a wedding album or children’s photographs, but also to watch a video of your grandparents when they were very young.

Terms of payment

• To reserve a date, you need to make an advance payment in the amount of 50% of the selected package. It is also necessary to keep in mind that all additional options are paid in full before the shooting. You can also book a date without prepayment, however, if the date is booked by someone else with a prepayment, priority will always be given to the client who left the prepayment.
• Video editing and delivery of finished material is completed within 6-7 weeks. After delivery to the customer, all materials are stored with me for 30 days.
• Payment for the shoot in full before or immediately after the shoot.
• Receiving wedding videos and photos is usually done via the Internet. Other materials - in person (flash drives, DVDs) at Novokosino metro station or through a cloud service. Delivery of materials to your address within Moscow – 1000 rubles.
• I also shoot outside the Moscow Ring Road and in the Moscow region. In this case, the price does not increase, but you will organize a transfer from and to any metro station in Moscow. If you do not have the opportunity to organize a transfer, then there is a small extra charge for the packages (depending on the distance from the Moscow Ring Road).
• Source materials are technical video materials that are used for editing. Raw materials are not finished materials. They can be of absolutely any quality. The shelf life of such materials depends on the volume and is set at my discretion.
• Photo processing - occurs at my discretion and usually does not include artistic retouching

My experience

I managed to photograph about 30 weddings. During my work, I was able to develop some rules to make filming easier.

Useful lifehacks:

1. Find yourself a partner. Filming a wedding with two cameras is the most convenient and reasonable solution. One plan is not enough for high-quality shooting. In addition, the two of you can find much more orders.
2. A camera on a tripod installed in front of the newlyweds’ table can hardly be turned off. This way the operator will have the opportunity to take a 5-minute break with a clear conscience.
3. Even if you have not formalized your business and are not an individual entrepreneur, draw up an agreement. In my work experience, I have never met dishonest customers, and most often, signed papers are enough to resolve misunderstandings.
4. A well-drafted contract includes clear information about shooting hours. It is necessary to enter a clause about the method of payment (in installments or non-cash form, as well as the moment when payment is made). The amount of material that the videographer undertakes to process.
5. Additional light on the camera greatly helps improve the quality of shooting. If there are no problems with the camera, the assistant can manually control the light to improve the composition of the picture.
6. Replaceable charging blocks. They also cost money. If there are only two of them, you need to play it safe: bring a charger and put the first unit into the outlet while the second one is in use (useful in the evening when filming in a restaurant).
7. First, it is better to process all the material and only at the end start cutting a beautiful roller. In this case, the processing time will be much less.

How to sit down to process

Sometimes it’s difficult to force yourself to even just look at the material. First, agree in advance on the time spent on installation. Only take on work with specific deadlines.

You can start editing with 20 minutes a day. This is a great psychological trick. Most often, after 20 minutes you will want to work a little more. With every hour spent on processing, it will be more and more difficult to tear yourself away from the wedding shots. A wild desire appears to complete the work and get aesthetic pleasure yourself.

Look at the most beautiful places (which you definitely think turned out well), think about what good moments you could use for your advertising in the future, as well as for presenting to potential clients.

How not to approach filming

Often, new videographers expect to get the most out of their work. In addition, it is worth noting that the first weddings always bring in little money, so the entire emphasis is on the result (for the portfolio).

And the bride and groom, first of all, want to enjoy what is happening, they are not models, but real people. Don't forget that working on camera is also work. And if professional artists are accustomed to such work, then for newlyweds this is a difficult test.

Try to be respectful and understanding. It’s very easy to ruin everyone’s mood and in this case the videographer won’t get any good recommendations.
