Features of men's manicure
From a practical point of view, the technique of men's manicure is no different from women's. The only thing that a master should know is that the structure of the nail and the location of the capillaries on a man’s hand are slightly different.
Features of nails in men:
- they are not subject to delamination;
- capillaries are located close to the surface;
- the skin of the hands is rougher and less susceptible to polishing.
The most suitable techniques for men's manicure:
- European;
Unedged European manicure - Brazilian;
Doing a Brazilian manicure - sawing;
What is a nail file manicure? - hardware;
What is hardware manicure, features of its implementation - hot.
Hot manicure - how to do it, what products are needed
Cutting methods are sometimes used, but the location of the capillaries often causes bloody wounds.
The main difference between the male procedure is the lack of decoration. In this case, it is not necessary that there is no coating at all - to strengthen and moisturize the nails and cuticles, apply:
- strengthening enamels;
- moisturizing serums;
- nourishing oil for nails and cuticles.
Some brands offer special strengthening products with a satin finish to avoid a glossy shine. We made a review of the best products for men's manicure at the end of the article - be sure to take a look.
Common hardware manicure mistakes
Work on damp skin. This is how the cutter catches and tears the cuticle. Do not steam your skin before the procedure!
Incorrect selection of technology. If your nails are in too bad a condition, then the device will not work for you. You will have to use a combined technique. If you try to treat the cuticle and nail plate with a device, you risk injuring the client.
Speed too high. For beginners in hardware manicure, it is better to work at medium speeds up to 15,000 rpm, so as not to make a cut and damage the skin.
Incorrectly selected cutter abrasiveness. Nozzles with a blue “belt” are suitable for rough cuticles, and with a red one – for thin and sensitive ones.
Hardware manicure at home is not as complicated as it seems! But only if you have been trained and have special knowledge. Otherwise, you risk damaging your nails and developing diseases.
Why do men need manicures?
- fungus prevention . Regular care of the nail plate reduces the risk of developing a fungal infection;
- aesthetics . Well-groomed hands are an indicator of health, status and self-love. It’s more pleasant to look at a director with well-groomed hands than at overgrown cuticles and hangnails;
- prevention of burrs . Due to the skin's tendency to dry, hangnails may appear on men's hands. Proper cuticle removal will help avoid this.
Types of men's manicure offered in the salon
The range of nail care services for men is also very wide; the client can choose a specific type of manicure based on his own goals and preferences.
Classical
Classic manicure is considered one of the most universal types of procedures. The peculiarity of the approach is that the master in the process trims off the pre-steamed excess skin with special scissors. This type has several advantages:
- This is usually the most affordable type of event;
- the versatility lies in the fact that trimmed manicure can be applied even to very neglected nails, and after the first procedure the fingers will acquire a well-groomed appearance;
- The technique is simple, but requires certain skills. A good specialist will quickly and harmlessly carry out this event.
It is worth noting that in the case of the trimming technique, the qualifications of a master who clearly understands what it is will be of great importance. If there are mistakes in the manicure, the cuticle can be damaged or the cut hangnails can quickly form again.
European
The peculiarity of this type of service is that during the process the cuticle is simply treated with special softening compounds and pushed back with a wooden stick. The procedure is faster and without the risk of injury to the skin layers, but it is only suitable for well-groomed hands without overgrown cuticles. This method allows you to gradually, over 5-7 sessions, significantly improve the condition of the nail plates, make the cuticle soft and neat, which will allow you to forget about the need to trim it mechanically. European manicure is considered the safest and most comfortable.
Hardware
The hardware technique will be most relevant for nail plates with deformations: delamination, damage, ribbing. At its core, this is a variation of the European approach, but in this case the cuticle is removed using a special device - a milling cutter, and a rotating cutter with a small ball at the end. Using other attachments, the shape of the nail can be adjusted and its surface polished. It is worth noting that such an event is normally tolerated by men’s nails, because they are more dense in structure, which means the risk of damage is minimal. The entire process is carried out on dry hands; hardware manicure does not require any preliminary soaking. If a real professional takes on the router, the processing of hands occurs very quickly and efficiently. Turning even very advanced cases into neat fingers.
French or French
French manicure is a coated procedure, which involves highlighting the free edge of the nail after performing the hygienic part using any method. Today this technique is also used for men, but most often it is used by shocking individuals who like to stand out. Sometimes the procedure is carried out in its more natural variation, when the short free edge is simply whitened from below with a special pencil.
SPA manicure and Japanese
A spa manicure is a real relaxation session, an opportunity to relax and enjoy pleasant manipulations. This procedure is not only effective, but also useful, since the process uses special products with numerous components. This manicure can be implemented using both classic, edged technology and European technology. Its peculiarity is that the master also performs peeling of the skin of the hands, a paraffin therapy session, and at the end a massage event using moisturizing compounds. At its core, this is a combined approach; such a manicure is a direct path not only to well-groomed nails, but also to beautiful hand skin without peeling cracks.
Japanese manicure cannot be called a separate care event; it is some kind of addition to classic, European or hardware manicure. The essence of the procedure is that the process uses special natural preparations based on beeswax, seaweed, pearl powder and other useful ingredients. For two weeks after such a session, your hands remain neat and well-groomed.
Subtleties of execution
Before we analyze the technique of performing a men’s manicure, we will determine the features that every master should know before starting the procedure. Take this into account when selecting saws, cutters and materials.
- Men's nails are stronger than women's and rarely peel. At the same time, filing them is more difficult. Choose a file with a harder surface – 150-180 grit;
- the shape of the free edge of the nail should follow the shape of the fingertip, even if the nail ends up looking asymmetrical;
- male trimmed manicure is potentially dangerous not only because of the close proximity of blood vessels, but also because the pain threshold in men is lower. If possible, avoid cutting the cuticle, giving preference to the European or Brazilian method;
- men more often require treatment of the cuticle and side ridges than women, since their skin grows faster;
- at the same time, the duration of men’s manicure procedures is half that of women’s;
- The skin on men's hands is prone to dryness and cracking, so along with nail care it is worth carrying out skin treatments. Hot manicure solves both problems at once, and paraffin therapy can be performed as an additional procedure.
Paraffin therapy for hands - what is it, benefits and step-by-step instructions
Most often, the procedure for men's hand care for masters is associated with stress, since men are more demanding of the procedure itself and the result.
Cutters for hardware manicure for beginners
Milling cutters vary in material, shape, diameter and hardness.
For beginners, it is recommended to use ceramic tips. They are quite soft, which means they are safer. But there is also a drawback - such cutters quickly become unusable.
Experienced craftsmen use diamond bits. With their help, you can treat the free edge of the nail, side ridges and cuticles, and remove rough skin.
Milling cutters come in various shapes. Each of them is intended for a specific area of work, but many can replace each other:
- “olive”, “bud”, “oval” - used to remove cuticles and treat side ridges;
- “ball” and “flame” also cope with this task;
- a “needle” is needed for treating cracks and side ridges, for rounding the corners of the nail, as well as for removing gel polish;
- a straight and truncated cone helps remove detachments and smears of gel polish, and also polishes and grinds well;
- a reverse cone, in addition to the above, creates a smooth edge of the nail;
- rounded cylinder - designed for processing side ridges and polishing the nail before extensions;
- straight cylinder - for modeling the free edge of an artificial nail, treating calluses and corns.
The hardness of the nozzles is determined by the colored notches that the manufacturer applies to the base. The classification principle is simple: the darker the color, the higher the hardness. It is not difficult to guess that the black and blue stripes will mean a high degree, and the red and yellow ones will mean a low degree.
During the procedure, we recommend using hard attachments first, gradually moving to medium and soft ones.
The small diameter of the attachments is intended for manicure, and the large diameter is intended for use during the pedicure procedure: with the help of such cutters it is easy to remove calluses, corns and other aesthetic imperfections on the feet.

Step-by-step instruction
The first thing the master should do is relax the client. Men's manicure is still not accepted by most Russians, and men who signed up for the procedure feel out of place.
In the instructions, we will look at the technology of European manicure step by step, and based on this, you can adjust the steps to suit any other technique.
Tools and materials:
- file 150-180 grit, for example from ruNail;
- cuticle remover. You can use any existing one or purchase a special one, for example, from the Nail Creation brand. They talked about it in more detail at the end of the article;
- orange stick – 2 pcs.;
- polishing buffer 900-1200 grit. It is convenient to use four-sided bars, like Mertz No. 979. Each side has its own abrasiveness.
- We start the manicure by filing the mold. You should not file down the corners of the nail - this may cause them to grow into the skin. Also, do not remove the length “under the root”. It is optimal to leave 1-2 mm of the free edge of the nail plate. Do not forget that the shape of the nail should follow the shape of the fingertip;
- The processing of the rollers is carried out with the same file as the sawdust of the form. For these purposes, you can also use a special diamond-coated cuticle file. The Mertz brand has one. When polishing the side rollers, try not to touch the nail so that cuts do not appear;
- Apply remover to the cuticle and leave it on for as long as indicated in the instructions for it. Usually the time does not exceed 1-3 minutes. If you have a cuticle file, you don’t need to apply remover - just lift the skin with an orange stick and file it without touching the nail;
- Use an orange stick to pry the cuticle where it touches the nail plate and gently move it towards the base. If the cuticle comes off completely, clean it with an orange stick;
- Remove any remaining remover or wash your hands if required by the manufacturer;
- Polish the nail plate with a buff.
After the hygiene procedure, you can cover the nail plates with a strengthening agent, apply cream to the brushes and cuticle oil.

Features of performing a manicure at home
The main difficulty can arise with the trimming technique - there is a high risk of damaging the skin and causing injury to yourself, so without proper experience you should not resort to cutting the cuticle. Hardware manicure will require special equipment, which is not always advisable to buy. It is better to use simple methods that do not require complex devices and techniques. A detailed description of the process will help you implement the event yourself without much difficulty.
What set of tools will you need?
To carry out the procedure at home, the set of tools completely depends on the chosen technique. So, the easiest way would be to carry out a European manicure, for which you only need an orange stick, a cuticle softener and a file to form a free edge and polish the plate. But for the classic trim, you will also need special tweezers or sharp nail scissors, and a bath for steaming your fingers.
How to do a manicure with your own hands: step-by-step execution
The standard technique involves performing hygienic manipulations, which will improve the condition of the nail plate, its appearance and blood circulation in the treated area. To do this, it is worth implementing the following steps:
- hand disinfection;
- fingers and nails should be steamed in warm water for a quarter of an hour; if desired, salt or aromatic oils can be added to it;
- Next, the cuticle should be carefully pushed back with an orange stick and, if desired, trimmed a little;
- nails are cut and filed, getting as close as possible to the smile line and its shape;
- The nail plates need to be polished and a strengthening agent applied to them. You can do without coating;
- The last stage is a hand massage with nourishing cream.

What a beginner needs for a hardware manicure: a list of everything
Manicure machine
For home use, a medium power device up to 45 W is suitable. For example, Nail Drill ZS-601. It has a smooth speed control from 0 to 35,000 rpm, which is carried out using a knob on the front panel of the device or a foot pedal. The direction of rotation of the nozzles is selected using a switch. There is a removable plastic holder for the router handle and holes for the cutters. Suitable for all stages of hardware manicure. Does not vibrate, works quietly. But it does not withstand long daily loads, so you should not use it for work - only for home.
Nail Drill ZS-601 35000 rpm/45 W
For professional use, you should take a closer look at a more powerful model – up to 65 W. The hit of all masters is Strong devices. For example, Strong 210/107 II has a rotation speed of up to 35,000 rpm. Equipped with a cooling system and ready to work continuously for 12 hours. If it overheats, it will automatically turn off - this guarantees a long service life. Lightweight and compact, so it won't take up much space on your desktop. The case has a convenient pen stand. Thanks to the collet mechanism, you can change attachments in a matter of seconds. During operation, neither the handle nor the device makes loud noises, vibrations or trembling due to four bearings.

Cutters for hardware manicure
Mills are attachments on the device that are used to perform manicures. Depending on the material, they are divided into several types.
Ceramic ones are suitable for preparing the nail plate, treating difficult areas of skin and nails, removing dead skin, calluses, removing gel polish or artificial acrylic nails, as well as for grinding down thick nails. They are expensive, so they are usually not included with the device for home use.
Metal (carbide or alloy steel) are used to treat nails and cuticles. They can, for example, clean off the pterygium and open the pocket. They differ from others in that they do not file off the skin or nail, but cut them off, forming fine dust. Therefore, the master should always protect the respiratory system with a mask. Metal attachments polish the skin well, can file off the hard coating on the nails and remove length. Typically, masters use such cutters for most stages of manicure.
Diamond cutters are needed to process sensitive skin and thin nail plates. Using them, the master can level the nail, smooth out unevenness, polish the ridges and prepare the nail for coating. A large nozzle will remove the callus.
Combined (silicon carbide) are suitable for home use. You've probably heard about “sand caps” - these are disposable attachments for bullet cutters. Combination cutters cannot be sterilized.
For each stage of manicure, you need to select cutters according to the shape depending on the purpose.
- Cone – for removal of pterygium and initial treatment of the lateral sinuses.
- Ball - for cutting the cuticle.
- Bullet – for polishing ridges and proximal folds.
- Corn - for removing old gel polish coating.
- Flame - to open the pocket and remove the pterygium.
- Needle – for treating the lateral sinuses.
Pusher or orange sticks
These tools are needed to push back the cuticle - this helps open the pocket during manicure to create a coating “under the cuticle”. The pusher has two sides: a spatula for pushing back the cuticle and a hatchet for removing the pterygium.
The good thing about an orange stick is that it has a more delicate effect on the skin, and after a manicure it can be disposed of, which ensures sterility. The pusher is more effective, but must be processed and sterilized after each client.
Note! To disinfect and sterilize instruments you will need an ultrasonic cleaner and a dry heater.
Ultrasonic bath CD-7810(A) 50 Watt CODYSON 750 ml
Dry-heat cabinet GP-10 MO
Files for hardware manicure
You will need files of different shapes and abrasiveness. To choose them, you first need to pay attention to the grit. This is the number of abrasive grains per 1 square meter. cm. The higher the value, the more sputtering grains per 1 square meter. cm and, accordingly, the softer the file.
Interesting! Modern manufacturers produce metal bases on which disposable replaceable files are glued - this is convenient, sterile and safe. But if you choose nail files for home use, it is better to buy classic reusable files.
Manicure hood (vacuum cleaner)
An extractor hood (vacuum cleaner) is a special device that sucks up fine dust that is harmful to the respiratory system. Can be built-in, portable and floor-mounted.
- Built-in hoods are mounted into a manicure table and covered with a grill for safety. This is convenient because... At the beginning of a hardware manicure, the master only needs to press the power button.
- Portable ones are suitable for home use and for those craftsmen who value mobility and simplicity. This hood is easy to replace if it breaks and can be placed on the table in a way that is convenient for you.
- Floor vacuum cleaners are stationary structures of impressive size. They are installed in showrooms and are valued for their high power and efficiency. The ventilation unit is located inside the device, and the hose is supplied to the technician’s workplace. Nowadays you rarely see such a vacuum cleaner, because... it is bulky, takes up a lot of space and does not look aesthetically pleasing.
Note! The hood bag must be emptied and cleaned regularly. For convenience, there are replaceable disposable bags.
Other tools
Buff is a special file in the shape of a block. Used for polishing the nail plate to remove irregularities, pterygium residues and clean the surface before applying gel polish.
A dust removal brush will come in handy when performing a hardware manicure to clean the nail plate.
An antiseptic (disinfectant) must be applied before any manicure to clean and disinfect the skin of your hands and nails. During the manicure itself, you will also need it for degreasing, disinfection and dehydration.
Oil or cream will help consolidate the results of a hardware manicure, moisturize and soothe the skin. You can view the manicure cream here and buy cuticle oil using this link.
